Description
Eyes Rutherford is a seventeen-year-old world-class pianist and a central figure among the Blade Children, a group of individuals bound by a shared, tragic lineage. He is of quarter English heritage and made his debut in the musical world at the age of fourteen, quickly gaining international recognition for his extraordinary talent. Despite his youth, Eyes carries himself with a calm, collected, and often seemingly cold-hearted demeanor, which masks a deep-seated dedication to the survival and well-being of his fellow Blade Children. He is described as being like a swan, appearing serene and composed on the surface while working tirelessly beneath it to navigate the dangerous circumstances that surround him and his kind.
His personality is defined by a sharp pragmatism and a strong sense of hope that he fiercely protects. While he can be ruthless and does not hesitate to kill if someone stands in the way of his goals, this behavior is always in service of protecting the Blade Children. He is a realist who requires hard evidence to place his trust in someone, but once that trust is earned, he becomes unconditionally loyal. Eyes is exceedingly loyal to the words of Kiyotaka Narumi and, among the Blade Children, he is portrayed as the one who believes most strongly in Kiyotaka’s younger brother, Ayumu, as a potential savior for their kind. He holds many secrets about their situation that he keeps to himself, often bearing the burden of knowledge to maintain a sense of hope for the others.
Within the story, Eyes acts as the ostensible leader of the Blade Children, although he treats his long-time friend Kanone Hilbert as an equal or even an older brother. Their bond, forged since childhood, is one of the most significant relationships in his life, and he is deeply affected when Kanone becomes a Hunter and betrays the group, an act that includes Kanone stabbing him. Despite this, his care for Kanone endures. He also shares a protective, brotherly relationship with Rio, frequently visiting her in the hospital and bringing her expensive melons. He is patient with the aggressive Kousuke Asazuki and values Ryoko, even when she expresses dislike for his expressionless face.
The key to Eyes’ motivation is his desperate fight against the fate that awaits all Blade Children: a predetermined descent into madness and death before they reach twenty years of age. His every action is driven by the goal of defying this destiny and saving his friends. Over the course of the narrative, he transitions from being Kanone’s second-in-command to the leader who devises strategies and uses his resources as a famous pianist to protect the group. In the end, Eyes chooses to concentrate on his piano career, becoming known as a savior of the music world, a path he selects to create his own sense of hope for the future.
Beyond his musical genius, Eyes possesses notable abilities that make him a formidable strategist. Although he was a frail and asthmatic child, he trained under Kanone to become competent in combat, preferring methods like strangulation. His true strength lies in his intellect and talent for organization; he excels at reading people’s skills and formulating complex plans to outmaneuver their enemies, the Hunters who seek to exterminate the Blade Children. He knows much more than the other Blade Children, holding secrets about their origins and fate that he carefully keeps to himself.
