Description
Kaito Kiriya is a 17-year-old human male with light brown hair, brown eyes, standing 173 cm tall and weighing 60 kg. He attends St. Luminous College as a grade 12 student and serves on the student council. Academically gifted, he possesses exceptional, unbeatable swordsmanship skills in both kendo and fencing. His personality is initially quiet, shy, and reserved, marked by a strong sense of justice and willingness to help friends. He remains unaware of the romantic feelings classmates Touka Kureha and Kanon Seena hold for him, particularly Kureha's longstanding affection.
Kiriya's life shifts dramatically after receiving a psychic message from an elven woman in a parallel fantasy world. Initially dismissed as a dream, the message proves real when a supernatural event transports him and Kanon Seena to this realm shortly after classmates Souma Akizuki and Touka Kureha arrive; their entire school building is transported as well. In the fantasy world, Kiriya and Seena establish the independent mercenary group the Luminous Knights, with Seena as leader and Kiriya serving as its primary knight.
Like Souma and Haruto Saionji, Kiriya is a Soul Blader, capable of manifesting swords from the hearts of individuals with whom he shares strong emotional bonds. He primarily wields the Gun Sword Blade Cannon, drawn from Seena's heart, and later manifests the Spirit Sword Blazing Sunlight from Kureha's heart. His Soul Blader status deepens when he is revealed to hold Souma's "Holy Grail," Souma's ultimate Soul Blade. This power is intrinsically linked to the elf Xecty, an artificial recreation of the Elven Queen, who serves as its vessel.
Kiriya's character undergoes substantial development following his arrival and the outbreak of war involving the Holy Grail. Initially gentle and conflict-averse, he becomes increasingly aggressive and emotionally volatile, believing military force is the only solution. This shift is influenced by his bond with Xecty and his mission to confront Saionji (now Emperor Traihard of Baelgard). His combat prowess is evident; he initially defeats Saionji using standard swords but loses a subsequent encounter. After the conflict surrounding the awakening of Zeroboros, guardian of time and space, resolves, he chooses to return to his original world alongside Kureha and Seena, leaving Souma and others behind.
In the related game *Shining Blade*, an alternate version appears as Fafner, the dark knight of the Dragonia Empire. This Fafner serves as a primary antagonist who takes control of Roselinde's heart. The narrative later reveals Fafner is Kaito Kiriya.
