Description
Mikage is the former land god of Mikage Shrine, also known as the Tochigami or Marriage God. He is depicted as a tall, lean man with shoulder-length blond hair, parted bangs, brown eyes, and large round glasses, often seen wearing a trenchcoat and hat. His avatar takes the form of a butterfly, which he uses to observe events from a distance.

His background is defined by a long absence from his shrine, which he abandoned over twenty years before the story begins. The reasons for his departure are not fully specified early on, though a noted dislike of dogs plays a part. He met the homeless high school girl Nanami Momozono in a park when she rescued him from a dog, and in gratitude, he bestowed the mark of the land god upon her by kissing her forehead, effectively transferring his divine duties and the shrine itself to her.

Mikage's personality is that of a kind-hearted, wise, and observant figure who prefers to guide fate gently rather than command it directly. He is known for being benevolent but also subtly manipulative in a way that serves the greater good. He maintains an air of mystery and operates from the background, watching over Nanami and others with genuine care. His philosophical outlook is captured in his belief that the world is beautiful even in the face of sorrow, a perspective he shares with Nanami to explain why he chose her as his successor.

His primary motivation appears to be a desire to see both Nanami and his former familiar, Tomoe, find peace and happiness. He orchestrates events from the shadows to allow Nanami to grow into her role as a deity and to nurture the bond between her and Tomoe, which he sees as essential for both of their futures. He also acts as a mentor, offering guidance and encouragement when Nanami loses confidence or faces confusion about her responsibilities.

In the story, Mikage's role is that of a catalyst. His decision to pass on his divine mark sets the entire narrative in motion. During the second season, his whereabouts become a key goal for Nanami, who seeks him out at the Divine Assembly in Izumo. Throughout the series, he remains a background presence, guiding Nanami and Tomoe toward a future where they can find resolution and happiness together.

His key relationships include his close friendship with the wind god Otohiko, who often acts as a confidant and helps watch over the shrine. His most significant bond is with Tomoe, his former familiar, for whom he harbors deep affection. He also develops a mentor-like relationship with Nanami, treating her with warmth and respect as she grows into her role as land god.

Mikage's development is revealed gradually as the story progresses. His past and his reasons for leaving the shrine become clearer over time, showing a figure who made difficult choices for the sake of those he cared about. He is not a character who undergoes dramatic change himself, but rather one whose influence drives the growth of others.

As a land god, Mikage possesses the authority and spiritual power to protect his territory and maintain balance between the human and spirit worlds. He is able to transfer his divine mark to another person, granting them the status and responsibilities of a land god. His ability to manifest as a butterfly allows him to observe and guide from a distance without direct interference. He is also shown to be knowledgeable about the workings of the divine realm and the history of the characters connected to him.
