Description
Keiju Tabuki is the homeroom teacher of Kanba and Shoma Takakura at West Garden High School, where he also serves as the advisor for the birdwatching club and teaches biology. He is a young man of about 23 years old, recognizable by his tanned skin, dark plum hair with bangs that sweep across the right side of his face, and blue-gray eyes framed by oval-shaped glasses. Tabuki's personal history is marked by profound childhood trauma. As a boy, he was pushed by his mother to become a pianist, but after the birth of a more talented half-brother, he was deemed insufficient and abandoned by her. The physical scars of this period remain visible as line-shaped marks at the base of all his fingers except the thumbs, resulting from an accident involving the piano's keyboard cover.
In his early school years, Tabuki found solace in a close friendship with a girl named Momoka Oginome. On March 20, 1995, when he was approximately ten years old, he overslept and missed a fatal train attack that claimed Momoka's life. This event became the defining trauma of his existence, leaving him haunted by grief and unable to forgive the incident that took her away. He remained close to the Oginome family following the tragedy, frequently visiting for dinner on curry days, and has known Momoka's younger sister, Ringo, since her birth.
Outwardly, Tabuki presents a persona that is lighthearted, kind, and somewhat naive or absent-minded. However, this cheerful exterior conceals a much darker and more tormented interior. He harbors a vengeful side and is described as a deeply helpless person struggling with immense inner pain. His motivations are largely driven by the loss of Momoka, to whom he seems to have had romantic feelings, and the search for a place to belong. He eventually becomes engaged to Yuri Tokikago, a famous and beautiful actress from the Sunshiny Theatre Troupe who finds his seemingly childlike demeanor endearing. Their engagement is announced at a party, after which he moves into her luxurious apartment.
Tabuki is largely unaware of the obsessive feelings Ringo Oginome holds for him. Ringo, believing she is destined by Momoka's diary to replace her sister, stalks Tabuki and views him as her future partner. For his part, Tabuki sees Ringo only as a younger sister figure and does not recognize the nature of her fixation. As the story progresses, the facade of a simple, happy teacher begins to crack. His engagement to Yuri falls apart when both realize they cannot create a "fake family" together to fill the void left by Momoka. Consumed by his unresolved trauma and a thirst for revenge, his actions grow more extreme. He eventually quits his teaching job. In the end, Tabuki experiences a measure of reconciliation when he stays together with Yuri, having come to understand why they were the ones "left behind" in the world after the tragedy that changed their lives. Beyond his role as an educator and the deep psychological scars he carries, Tabuki does not possess any notable superhuman or fantastical abilities.
