Kanata Wakamiya was raised alongside Yuki at the Asahi Orphanage, forming a brotherly bond. As the older of the two, he eventually moved out and became independent—a fact Yuki deeply admired and sought to emulate. Kanata often returned to visit Yuki, repeatedly asking him to live together someday and voicing strong opposition to Yuki’s stay at the Twilight Mansion. Outside these visits, he dedicated himself to researching a mysterious old book he had possessed since childhood: the Book of Raziel.
Unbeknownst to most, Kanata is the human incarnation of Reiga Giou, the sworn enemy of the Giou Clan. Reiga was originally a member of the noble Giou Clan and one of their Four Saints a thousand years ago, but he turned against them to join the Duras. A half-Duras, he wielded immense spiritual power. The tragic death of Yomi, a woman Reiga loved—killed by the Giou elders—caused him to despise the clan. Though not directly responsible for her death, Reiga was framed, fueling a lasting hatred.
Because his soul was too powerful for a human vessel, Reiga’s memories and abilities remained sealed in each reincarnation until physical maturity to avoid fatal consequences. His first human incarnation deteriorated from overuse of demonic power, leading to a second rebirth as Kanata Wakamiya, who initially remembered nothing of his past.
As Kanata, he displayed caring and gentle behavior toward Yuki, using softer speech with him, though he remained aloof and detached toward others. Even after renouncing the name Wakamiya Kanata, he retained warm memories of life with Yuki, creating a deep internal conflict. His heart, cold as ice, became confused and frustrated by the emotions he experienced as Kanata, torn between a desire to destroy humanity and an urge to protect Yuki.
A necromancer of extraordinary power, Reiga could summon and control multiple high-level Duras at once. If he depleted all his spiritual energy, he would enter a centuries-long hibernation to recover—a relatively short period compared to beings like Takashiro Giou. He harbored a general hatred for humanity, viewing people as foolish and sinful, but made a singular exception for Yuki, whom he genuinely cared for and wished to protect.
Throughout the story, Kanata frequently approached Yuki, pleading with him to leave the Twilight Mansion and avoid danger—requests Yuki consistently declined. Reiga later explicitly stated that while he held no concern for humanity, he did not want Yuki to die and intended to keep him safe. This inner conflict prevented him from harming Yuki, ultimately leading him to command Luze to protect Yuki after the war.
It was also noted that Kanata was an avid gamer. The complexity of his relationship with Yuki was reflected in Yuki’s irregular use of honorifics when addressing him, hinting at their former closeness. Among Reiga’s motivations was the goal to resurrect Yomi, whose death had originally driven him to betray the Giou Clan.
