Description
Cho Hakkai, originally Cho Gonou, was a human orphan raised by Catholic nuns. He worked as a schoolteacher and fell in love with Kanan, later discovering she was his biological twin sister. Their life shattered when villagers sacrificed Kanan to the youkai lord Hyakugan Maoh. Consumed by rage, Gonou slaughtered the villagers, massacred Hyakugan Maoh's entire clan of nearly one thousand youkai, and killed Hyakugan Maoh himself. During his rampage, he found Kanan captive; she revealed her pregnancy from rape and committed suicide with his knife. The only survivor, Chin Yisou (Hyakugan Maoh's son), attacked Gonou and deliberately exposed him to his own blood, triggering Gonou's transformation into a youkai as the thousandth youkai whose blood he encountered.
Near death, Gonou was rescued by Sha Gojyo, who provided care and support. Genjo Sanzo and Son Goku were later sent to apprehend Gonou. Confronting them, Gonou encountered a surviving crow demon who revealed he had mutilated the corpse of Gonou's brother-in-arms. As atonement, Gonou gouged out his own right eye. He prepared to remove his left eye when Goku intervened. Gonou then killed the crow demon, declaring his will to live. The Buddhist Trinity subsequently declared Cho Gonou dead, renaming him Cho Hakkai to symbolize his rebirth.
Hakkai appears as a tall, slender man with unkempt brown hair, green eyes, and a perpetually gentle demeanor. He wears a magitech prosthetic right eye, requiring corrective glasses, and conceals a prominent abdominal scar. He favors loose, scholarly clothing, including a distinctive white shoulder cloth protecting him from his pet dragon Hakuryuu's claws; Hakuryuu transforms into a green jeep for transportation. Three silver ear cuffs on his left ear act as magitech limiters suppressing his youkai form. Removing them transforms him physically: his left eye turns yellow with a slit pupil, ears sharpen, nails elongate into claws, and dark vine-like markings spread across his skin. This form grants enhanced strength, speed, and chi manipulation but risks loss of control due to minus waves, aggressive impulses, and prolonged blindness in his prosthetic eye.
His personality balances surface tranquility with deep-seated turmoil. He serves as the Sanzo group's caretaker, handling cooking, cleaning, and medical needs using chi-based healing. While rarely angry, his occasional outbursts are profoundly intimidating. A dry, ambiguous wit and encyclopedic knowledge make him a formidable poker player. He consumes alcohol without intoxication, possibly linked to his penance under the Noble Eightfold Path. His cheerful facade masks profound guilt, self-loathing, and melancholy from his past, though bonds with half-youkai Gojyo and the group help him gradually accept his youkai nature.
Hakkai's combat relies on kikou jutsu (chi manipulation), enabling energy blasts, protective barriers, and wound healing—though he cannot regenerate lost blood. He possesses advanced martial arts skills and surprising physical strength. In youkai form, his chi powers intensify, and his vine markings extend as tangible bindings to ensnare foes or conduct energy like electricity. He avoids this form unless necessary, removing his limiters only three confirmed times: rescuing Gojyo from hostage youkai, confronting Goku inside Kinkaku's gourd, and subduing a berserk Seiten Taisei-empowered Goku—during which his vine manipulation and strategic lightning use nearly proved fatal.
Key relationships define his development. Gojyo represents his anchor to humanity, their bond deepening into a dynamic of mutual reliance and domesticity through shared trauma. Goku evokes Gonou's teaching instincts, though their dynamic reversed when Goku prevented Hakkai's self-destruction. Sanzo offers tacit trust, accepting Hakkai's past without judgment. Hakkai's celestial predecessor, Field Marshal Tenpou Gensui, shared his intellectual curiosity, protective ferocity, and a close partnership with Kenren (Gojyo's past incarnation).
Hakkai's journey reflects a constant balancing act between human compassion and youkai rage, his self-forged identity ("Cho Hakkai") serving as both shield and testament to resilience.
