Description
Hisashi Watanabe, often called Nabe by his peers, is a student at Seidou High School and a member of its prestigious baseball club. He is a third-year student during the events of Act II, having joined the team in his first year through general admissions rather than as a scouted player. Physically, he is described as a lean teenager of average height, standing 172 centimeters tall and weighing 58 kilograms, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Watanabe's background is defined by the struggle of a non-elite player trying to find his place on a team filled with exceptional talent. Initially, he and a couple of his similarly situated classmates felt immense pressure and doubt about their worth on the team, questioning if it was acceptable for them to remain when surrounded by players who seemed far more dedicated and zealous. This feeling of being an outsider looking in is central to his character. However, he discovered his unique value does not lie in his athletic prowess on the field, but in his sharp observational skills and meticulous nature. He is exceptionally good at taking notes, so much so that his data-collecting abilities are considered to be on par with those of the highly respected former player and manager, Chris Takigawa Yuu. This led to him being entrusted with the crucial role of scouting upcoming opponents and gathering information to help the team prepare strategically.

His motivation shifts from simply wanting to belong to a deep sense of purpose in serving the team. He is sincerely grateful to have a role where he can contribute, even if it is from the sidelines. A key moment for Watanabe occurs during a match against Ugumori when the team captain, Kazuya Miyuki, mouths a word of apology to him. This small act makes Watanabe feel like he is truly a part of the team for the first time, acknowledging the value of his hard work. At the same time, however, this feeling clarifies the painful reality of his situation; the playing field, which appears so close, feels infinitely far away, and he realizes that bridging that gap is beyond his athletic abilities. This realization solidifies his commitment to his role as a data specialist, a path he fully embraces rather than dwelling on what he cannot do.

His role in the story is therefore that of an invaluable behind-the-scenes strategist. He is not a star player who makes game-winning hits, but his detailed reports and analyses of opposing teams provide the regular lineup with the information they need to succeed. He is often seen in the stands or behind the scenes, diligently watching games and compiling notes. He was even considered as a potential manager, a move he contemplated to dedicate himself entirely to support work, but he ultimately remains a registered player, often listed as a left fielder.

His key relationships are primarily with the other regular members, who respect his analytical contributions. His bond with Miyuki Kazuya is particularly significant, as it is Miyuki who directly requests his scouting help, thereby giving him a clear purpose. He is also very close to his classmates who joined the team at the same time, namely Yasushi Kudo and Shuji Higashio, and they frequently support each other as they navigate the pressures of being on the elite team.

In terms of development, Watanabe evolves from a student plagued by insecurity, wondering if he even belongs on the team, to a confident and vital member of the organization. He finds pride in his specialized skill set. While he might feel the sting of being unable to become a regular player, he no longer lets that define his worth. His notable ability is his profound talent for observation, data collection, and analysis. He can watch a match and record detailed, strategic notes that are trusted completely by the coach and the team captain, providing a tactical edge that is as important as any physical play on the field.
