Description
Makoto Kurumizawa is a high school student at Otowa-no-Mori and one of the main male characters in the group of friends. He is outwardly obsessed with girls, maintaining an electronic database of nearly every attractive female student at the school, to the point of bribing informants for information and consulting computer dating simulators and guidebooks. Despite this appearance, he is actually terribly shy and struggles to act decisively in romantic situations. He is the only techno-geek among his friends, often using his technical knowledge to try to gain an edge in his pursuit of romance.

His role in the story is primarily as comic relief and a supportive friend, often providing gossip or teasing his companions such as Kyoichi and Kenjo. His own romantic journey involves a string of misadventures. He botches a date with a girl named Erika Kawai, which leads him to eventually start a relationship with her best friend, Yumi Kazama, who acted as a bridge between them. Another incident sees him hospitalized for peeping at a girl climbing an overpass, during which he has a brief interlude with a nursing intern, but he quickly forgets about her when he spots the original girl again. His scooter is also involved in a minor accident with a mini-truck.

Makoto’s motivations stem from a desire to find a girlfriend and fit in, yet his deep-seated shyness and lack of confidence repeatedly undermine his efforts. He rarely shows significant emotional growth or introspection, remaining largely defined by his contradictory nature—a loud, girl-crazy exterior covering an insecure and indecisive interior. His notable abilities are limited to his technical savvy with computers and databases, as well as a knack for gathering information about his classmates. He drives a scooter, though his recklessness sometimes leads to trouble. Overall, he serves as a humorous counterpart to the more serious romantic storylines in the series, embodying the awkwardness and frustration of teenage romance from a geeky perspective.
