Description
Gordin, also romanized as Gordon, is a character from the Fire Emblem series who appears in the two-episode anime adaptation produced in the 1990s. He is a young archer from the kingdom of Altea and a member of its royal knights, serving as one of Prince Marth's loyal companions.
In the anime, Gordin is depicted as a teenager, appearing noticeably younger than Marth and possessing a very youthful look that can cause others to underestimate his age. He has green hair, which is typically styled to about ear length, and his eye color has varied between green and brown depending on the source material. As a character, Gordin is initially presented as an inexperienced archer who has enlisted in the military to serve his homeland. Despite his lack of polish with the bow, he is deeply committed to improving his skills and dreams of one day becoming a full-fledged Sniper.
Gordin's personality is characterized by a strong sense of patriotism and unwavering loyalty to both his country and his prince. He is devoutly dedicated to Marth and fights alongside him throughout the conflicts depicted in the story. However, beneath this dedication lies a lack of self-confidence. Gordin can be somewhat timid and insecure about his abilities, sometimes hesitating before releasing an arrow due to doubts about his marksmanship. He is also self-conscious about his juvenile bearing, longing to project a more dignified and authoritative presence like some of the older knights he admires. Despite these insecurities, he possesses a determined attitude and a humble nature, willing to seek out guidance and training to better himself.
In terms of his role within the narrative, Gordin is among the Altean soldiers who flee to the island nation of Talys alongside Marth after their homeland is invaded and conquered. He participates in the battles that follow as Marth begins his campaign to liberate the continent. The anime adaptation draws from his backstory in the games, which includes a notable incident where Gordin is captured and used as a decoy by enemy soldiers. He is bound, gagged, and dressed in an enemy uniform in an attempt to trick Marth into killing him, but Marth recognizes him and frees him.
A key element of Gordin's development is his relationship with the master Sniper Jeorge from Archanea. After the first war concludes, Gordin becomes Jeorge's squire, traveling to Archanea to hone his archery skills under the tutelage of this renowned marksman. This period of training represents Gordin's dedicated effort to overcome his weaknesses and improve his abilities. He also shares a very strong bond with his younger brother, Ryan, who is also an archer. Gordin plays the role of the supportive older brother, offering praise and encouragement while watching over Ryan both during training and on the battlefield.
As an archer, Gordin's notable ability is his use of bows, which allows him to engage enemies from a distance without taking counterattacks in close combat. In the context of his early appearances, he serves as a source of chip damage against foes, able to attack accurately from two spaces away. His class is that of an Archer, which has the limitation of low movement compared to mounted units. Gordin works with various types of bows, including the Iron Bow and Steel Bow. His potential for growth lies in his determination to practice and learn from his master Jeorge, and he eventually aims to promote to the Sniper class, which would grant him greater movement and higher stats.
