Description
Born October 29, C.E. 55 in PLANT's December City, Coordinator Athrun Zala spent part of his childhood attending school in Copernicus City on the moon, forging a close friendship with Kira Yamato. Before returning to PLANT in C.E. 68, he crafted a robotic bird named Birdy as a parting gift for Kira. After his mother perished in the Bloody Valentine Tragedy on February 14, C.E. 70, Athrun enrolled in the ZAFT military academy on February 21, graduating first in his class for mobile suit piloting, hand-to-hand combat, and knife-fighting.
Piloting the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam during the First Alliance-PLANT War as part of Rau Le Creuset's team, Athrun's mission to steal Earth Alliance mobile suits at Heliopolis led to a clash with Kira, piloting the Strike Gundam to protect friends aboard the Archangel. Torn between loyalty to ZAFT and his bond with Kira, Athrun faced Kira in a battle where the Aegis self-destructed, nearly killing both. Rescued from the explosion by Cagalli Yula Athha, they formed a connection while stranded together. Receiving the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam from his father, Patrick Zala, Athrun defected to the Three Ships Alliance upon learning of Patrick's genocidal plans against Naturals. He ended the war by destroying the superweapon GENESIS, detonating the Justice within it.
Two years later, living in Orb under the alias "Alex Dino," Athrun served as bodyguard to Chief Representative Cagalli. Accompanying her to meet ZAFT Chairman Gilbert Durandal at Armory One, he witnessed Phantom Pain steal three new Gundams. Hoping to prevent another conflict, Athrun temporarily rejoined ZAFT at Durandal's request. As a FAITH officer and commander aboard the Minerva, he piloted the ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam and mentored Shinn Asuka. Growing disillusioned by ZAFT's actions, especially attacks on the Archangel and Kira, Athrun was framed as a traitor. He escaped ZAFT with Meyrin Hawke. Lacus Clyne later provided him the ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam, which he used to oppose Durandal's Destiny Plan. He participated in destroying the superweapon Requiem and defeated Shinn in the final battle.
In the film *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom*, Athrun undertakes covert operations for Terminal, initially piloting a red Z'Gok. He exposes the Foundation's manipulation of Requiem and the Destiny Plan. During the climax, the Z'Gok's shell unit detached to reveal the upgraded Infinite Justice Type II. Athrun defeated Foundation ace Shura Serpentine using psychological tactics, focusing on intimate thoughts of Cagalli to disrupt Shura's mind-control abilities. The film concludes with Athrun reuniting with Cagalli on Earth, confirming their reconciled relationship.
Athrun's personality blends idealism, compassion, and internal conflict. He strives to be a "perfect soldier" yet constantly questions orders and war's moral ambiguities. His indecisiveness leads to actions perceived as betrayals by both ZAFT and allies, though his core drive remains protecting innocent lives. Key relationships include his deep friendship with Kira, his romantic bond with Cagalli, and his respectful but distant former engagement to Lacus Clyne. The manga *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny: The Edge* reframes events from his perspective, adding depth to his internal struggles and leadership role.
A highly skilled pilot across diverse mobile suits like the specialized Aegis and the versatile Infinite Justice, Athrun is also proficient in micro-robotics, having created Haro units for Lacus and Birdy for Kira. His adaptable combat style favors beam sabers and measured firepower, avoiding unnecessary fatalities.
