Description
Michiru Nishikiori, often called Micchi, is an exchange student from England who becomes a central figure in Kamichama Karin and its sequel Kamichama Karin Chu. His background is marked by tragedy: his parents died in a car accident, leaving him orphaned. He was later rescued by Kazune Kujou's father, who gave him a magical ring, an event that deeply influences Michiru's loyalty and sense of purpose. Because he spent a year in the hospital recovering from unspecified injuries, he is a year older than his classmates despite being in the same grade as Karin, Kazune, and Himeka.
Personality-wise, Michiru is notably amorous and flirtatious, often making romantic advances toward both Karin and Kazune. He has a somewhat eccentric, happy-go-lucky, and occasionally airheaded demeanor that contrasts with a more serious and even sinister side that emerges under certain circumstances. This duality makes him unpredictable. He can be a bit of a pervert, as seen when he steals Karin's first kiss in the manga. Despite his playful tendencies, he carries a deep respect for Kazune, initially mistaking him for Kazune's father Kazuto, and continues to hold that reverence throughout the story.
Michiru's role evolves between the original series and Chu. In the first season, he is a supporting character, but he gains more prominence in Chu. In the anime adaptation, his ring bestows the power of Zeus, making him a key ally in battles. In the manga, while he is suspected of holding Zeus's power, it is actually Yuuki Sakurai who does, though Michiru remains important. In Chu, his ring is explicitly tied to the power of Neptune. He shares a close bond with the other main characters, especially Kazune, and his flirtatious nature often creates comedic tension within the group.
Throughout the series, Michiru develops from a carefree exchange student into a more reliable and plot-relevant comrade, particularly in Chu where his abilities and connections become crucial. His notable ability is the use of his magical ring to transform and wield divine power, primarily associated with water or the sea (Neptune). This power allows him to fight alongside Karin, Kazune, and the others against various threats. His growth is marked by a deepening commitment to his friends and a gradual acceptance of his own past trauma.
