Description
Hideo Shimada is a character who appears in the middle portion of the story as a high school student, though this identity is merely a disguise. In truth, he is a Parasyte, a parasitic organism that has taken over the body of a seventeen-year-old boy and now operates from within his host. He is sent by a more senior Parasyte named Reiko Tamura specifically to enroll at the same school as the protagonist, Shinichi Izumi, with the mission of observing him and reporting on his behavior. While in the original manga he was depicted as an upperclassman with a large build and black hair, his appearance in the anime adaptation was redesigned to that of a thin, handsome young man with long brown hair, a look that quickly makes him popular among the female students.

On the surface, Hideo presents himself as calm, reasonable, and friendly. He speaks politely, using the pronoun "I" in a way that mimics human social cues, and he claims to be experimenting with a lifestyle that does not require feeding on humans. He even tells Shinichi that he is trying to adapt to a human diet and wishes to coexist peacefully. This behavior leads Migi, the Parasyte inhabiting Shinichi's hand, to label him a "talk-it-out type," someone who might be reasoned with. Beneath this carefully constructed mask of civility, however, Hideo remains a ruthless predator. Despite his claims to the contrary, he secretly continues to hunt and feed on humans, viewing them with the same cold detachment a person might have toward cattle. He has no qualms about using violence against anyone who threatens his cover, including bullies who try to pick a fight with him. His actions demonstrate a fundamental hypocrisy: he speaks of peace while continuing to kill.

Hideo's primary role in the narrative is to serve as a direct threat to Shinichi and his social circle, increasing the tension and danger within the seemingly ordinary school setting. His mission is to observe Shinichi, but his presence inadvertently endangers those closest to him, particularly Shinichi's friend Satomi Murano. He also develops a key relationship with a classmate named Yuko Tachikawa, who becomes infatuated with him and begins stalking him. Yuko's brother is a police sketch artist, and using her brother's insights, she becomes suspicious of Hideo's unnatural behavior. Her discovery of his true identity is the catalyst for the story's climax involving him. Hideo also has a brief but important interaction with Kana Kimishima, a girl who possesses a rare, unconscious ability to sense Parasytes. When she mistakes him for Shinichi due to this ability, Hideo becomes intensely curious about why she is different from other humans.

The character's development is marked by a sharp and violent transition. The calm and controlled exterior completely shatters when Yuko confronts him in an isolated art room. Attempting to kill her to protect his secret, she throws a bottle of solvent at him. In the anime, this is an oil paint remover, while in the manga it is a strong acid, but in either version, the liquid causes severe damage to his Parasyte cells. The damage prevents him from fully controlling his shape-shifting abilities and returning to his human face, causing a mental breakdown. He enters a "runaway state," where his fractured consciousness acts on pure survival instinct, reflexively attacking and killing anyone he encounters. What follows is a massacre at the school, where he kills dozens of students and even police officers who arrive on the scene.

As a Parasyte, Hideo possesses the standard abilities of his species. He can shape-shift his head into a mass of sharp, blade-like tentacles for combat. He also uses his shape-shifting to alter his facial features, making himself more attractive to lure human prey effectively. He is capable of pushing his host body to its peak physical condition, displaying incredible athletic prowess and durability. During his rampage, he survives being shot multiple times, continuing to kill even after sustaining what would be fatal wounds for a normal human. His end comes not from gunfire but from Shinichi. With a coordinated attack using the combined strength of his own body and Migi's power, Shinichi hurls a large rock with enough force to pierce through Hideo's chest and destroy his heart, the only sure way to kill a Parasyte. In his final moments, as his consciousness briefly returns, he recognizes Shinichi's attack before dying.
