Description
Athrun Zala is a Coordinator, a genetically enhanced human, who plays a central role in the conflicts of the Cosmic Era, particularly in the series Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny. He is the son of Patrick Zala, a prominent and radical politician within the PLANTs, the colony nation of Coordinators. His mother, Lenore Zala, was killed during the "Bloody Valentine" tragedy, a devastating terrorist attack on a PLANT agricultural colony that served as a catalyst for the First Alliance-PLANT War. This personal loss was a primary reason for Athrun enlisting in ZAFT, the military force of the PLANTs, at a young age.
In terms of personality, Athrun is often described as quiet, reserved, and fundamentally benevolent. He possesses a strong sense of duty and initially believes that following orders is the most effective path to ending war. However, he is also deeply introspective and compassionate, which often puts him at odds with the rigid expectations of a soldier. A significant internal struggle for Athrun is his indecisiveness; he constantly seeks his own sense of truth and justice amidst the chaos of war, which leads others on both sides of the conflict to view him as a traitor, a label that causes him great frustration. He is serious and professional, particularly when serving as a commander, but his thoughtful nature makes him a reluctant leader at times.
Athrun's motivations are complex and evolve throughout his story. Driven initially by revenge against the Naturals (non-enhanced humans) for his mother's death, his perspective begins to shift after he is reunited with his childhood best friend, Kira Yamato, who is also a Coordinator but fighting for the Earth Alliance. This friendship forces Athrun to confront the moral ambiguity of the war. His primary motivation becomes the desire to protect those close to him and to find a way to end the cycle of hatred and violence, even if it means defying his own father and nation.
In Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny, Athrun is initially living incognito on the neutral nation of Orb under the alias Alex Dino, acting as a bodyguard and aide to Cagalli Yula Athha, the representative of Orb with whom he shares a deep personal bond. When a new war erupts, he is persuaded by Gilbert Durandal, the chairman of the PLANTs, to rejoin ZAFT. Athrun is given the prestigious rank of FAITH, which places him directly under the chairman's command, and is assigned as a field commander and mobile suit pilot aboard the new ZAFT warship, the Minerva. In this role, he pilots the ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam and attempts to mentor younger, more impulsive pilots like Shinn Asuka. His role is that of a seasoned, highly skilled veteran whose experiences make him wary of the very war he is once again fighting.
Key relationships are central to Athrun's character development. His bond with Kira Yamato is the most significant; they are former best friends turned rivals turned allies, and their ability to eventually reconcile and fight together represents a major thematic resolution. His relationship with Cagalli Yula Athha is a source of personal strength and conviction, and his desire to protect her heavily influences his decisions. He was also once politically engaged to Lacus Clyne, a popular singer and the daughter of a moderate PLANT leader. While their engagement was arranged, they share a mutual respect and friendship, though Lacus ultimately ends up with Kira. On the Minerva, he acts as a reluctant superior to the protagonist Shinn Asuka, with their differing philosophies on war leading to significant conflict.
Athrun undergoes notable development from the first series into Seed Destiny. At the end of the first war, he is a disillusioned young man who has rejected his father's genocidal ideology and defected to the Three Ships Alliance to stop the fighting. By the start of Seed Destiny, he is trying to live a peaceful life, scarred by his past experiences. However, his return to ZAFT sees him regress into old habits, becoming a model soldier who suppresses his doubts about the path he has chosen. His arc in the series culminates in a final break from Durandal's faction after realizing its manipulative and oppressive nature. He once again defects, this time permanently, to join the Archangel and his old friends to fight for a genuinely free future, piloting the advanced ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam in the final battles.
Athrun is noted for several notable abilities. He was the top graduate of the ZAFT military academy, excelling in mobile suit piloting, hand-to-hand combat, and knife fighting. As a pilot, he is exceptionally skilled, particularly in close-quarters combat, and is considered one of the most formidable aces of his era. He possesses the SEED factor, a rare ability that greatly enhances his mental and physical capabilities in battle, though his ability to consciously activate it is sometimes hindered by his emotional turmoil. Beyond combat, Athrun has a talent for micro-robotics, having built a robotic bird named Birdy for his friend Kira and numerous spherical Haro robots for Lacus Clyne.
