Description
Katsura Kotarou is a central character who embodies a fascinating blend of unwavering idealism and comedic eccentricity. He is a survivor of the Joi War, a past conflict where Earth's samurai fought against the alien Amanto invaders. Alongside his former comrades Sakata Gintoki and Takasugi Shinsuke, he was a student of the revered teacher Yoshida Shouyou. Following the war and the capture and execution of their teacher by the shogunate, Katsura became a prominent leader of the Jouishishi, a faction of rebels continuing to resist the Amanto-controlled government. As a result, he is a high-profile fugitive wanted by the Tokugawa Shogunate and its police force, the Shinsengumi.citation:1citation:2

In terms of personality, Katsura presents a striking contradiction. On the surface, he is usually calm, polite, and carries himself with a noble, almost stoic demeanor. However, he is famously an airhead, lacking common sense and often engaging in bizarre, nonsensical behavior with a perfectly straight face. He possesses a wild imagination, leading to dramatic internal monologues and flashbacks over trivial matters, and has a penchant for outdated hobbies like playing on a Famicom. One of his most persistent running gags is his insistence on his own name; whenever Gintoki calls him by the nickname "Zura" (a slang word for wig), Katsura earnestly corrects him, saying, "It's not Zura, it's Katsura." Despite these oddities, he is shown to be a highly charismatic and effective leader, commanding deep respect from his followers. He is thrifty, prefers simple meals like soba, and has a noted soft spot for the paw pads of animals as well as a peculiar fondness for married women.citation:1citation:2citation:3citation:9

Katsura's motivations evolve throughout the story. Initially fueled by grief and rage over his teacher's death, he is a radical terrorist willing to use bombings to achieve his goals. His core conviction is the liberation of his country from Amanto oppression. However, after clashing with Gintoki and witnessing the destructive path taken by his former friend Takasugi, Katsura shifts his approach. He decides he no longer wishes to destroy the country, as it contains too many things and people he has come to cherish, and instead seeks a more peaceful, patient path to change it from within. This involves building an extensive spy network, gathering information, and influencing people through moderate means rather than indiscriminate violence.citation:1citation:2citation:5citation:9

As a key figure in the resistance, Katsura's role is that of a revolutionary leader and strategist. He is constantly on the run from the authorities, a task he manages through his legendary ability to escape and his mastery of disguise, adopting personas such as a pirate captain, a waitress named "Zurako," and a monk. His role in the story is often as an unpredictable ally to the Yorozuya, aiding Gintoki in major battles while also being the source of countless comedic situations.citation:1citation:3citation:9

His relationships are critical to his character. His bond with his former teacher, Yoshida Shouyou, is the foundation of his beliefs. His friendship and rivalry with Sakata Gintoki is complex, marked by shared history and mutual respect, though Gintoki refuses to join his rebel faction. He stands in stark opposition to his former classmate Takasugi Shinsuke, whose nihilistic desire for destruction directly contrasts Katsura's more hopeful vision. Perhaps his most constant companion is Elizabeth, a mysterious, large, duck-like creature whose true nature is a running joke; Elizabeth is both a friend and a partner in his activities. He also shares a significant connection with Ikumatsu, a ramen shop owner who helps him when he is injured, showing his softer side.citation:1citation:5citation:10

Katsura exhibits notable character development. He transforms from a rigid, radical terrorist into a more pragmatic and moderate leader who understands the value of patience and the importance of protecting civilians. His past trauma, particularly the loss of his teacher, softens as he forges new bonds and finds a new way to fight for his ideals.citation:1citation:2

In terms of abilities, Katsura is an exceptionally skilled and powerful samurai, having been trained by Yoshida Shouyou. As one of the legendary "Joi Four," his swordsmanship is on par with Gintoki's, earning him the nickname "The Nobleman of Madness" for his fierce combat style. He is also a master of explosives and a remarkable tactician and strategist; Sakamoto Tatsuma credits Katsura's planning and ability to conduct strategic retreats as the main reason the Joi resistance lasted as long as it did. His "Runaway Kotarou" moniker reflects not cowardice, but a shrewd survival instinct taught by his grandmother: a general must be more fearful than anyone else to stay alive and lead his men. He has demonstrated incredible endurance, speed, and even a unique ability to have never caught a cold, as his body absorbs viruses, which once transformed him into a being called "Ill Smith."citation:2citation:5citation:10
