Description
Heita Matsuda is a character from the anime Golden Kamuy who is introduced as one of the former inmates from Abashiri Prison. He is an expert in gold and platinum panning, possessing specialized knowledge of the techniques and specific locations in rivers where these precious metals are most likely to be found.
Born in Eastern Hokkaido, Matsuda experienced a deeply traumatic event during his childhood that fundamentally shaped his psyche. When he was twelve years old, he heard Ainu stories about a Wen Kamuy, which is a fearsome brown bear deity. His family later fell victim to an actual bear attack, an event that led to the deaths of his relatives. This horrific incident, combined with the terror inspired by the Ainu legend, caused Matsuda to develop a severe psychological condition that appears to be Dissociative Identity Disorder. He is haunted by constant hallucinations of both the bear and his deceased family members, and his personality fragments as a direct result of this trauma and his overwhelming guilt.
Matsuda's primary personality is generally kind, helpful, and generous. When he is in this state, he calmly explains the intricacies of gold panning to others and shares his knowledge of the river's riches. However, this personality frequently gives way to others. One of the most prominent alternate personalities is that of his brother's wife, Noriko, who is depicted as a seductive woman. Another is his brother, Taka. He also becomes possessed by the personality of the Wen Kamuy itself, during which he hallucinates that he is being consumed by the bear and enters an uncontrollable, murderous rampage. This "possessed" state only ends after he has killed someone, at which point he hallucinates that his own body explodes, with chunks of his flesh scattering into the mountains. This violent cycle allows him to continue a pattern of self-punishment for his past.
Matsuda's role in the story takes place during the search for the Ainu gold. He is encountered by the protagonist Sugimoto and his group while they are prospecting in a river rich with platinum. Initially presenting as a harmless and eccentric miner living with his family, his strange behavior and the increasingly bizarre events surrounding him reveal the truth. The companions he is seen with are not real; they are all manifestations of his alternate personalities. Consumed by guilt over the death of his family, Matsuda believes he has become a Wen Kamuy, a monster that punishes human greed, and he has killed multiple people while in his dissociative state.
He is sometimes referred to as the Brown Bear Man due to this violent alter ego. His key relationships are entirely internal, centered on his interactions with the imagined versions of his deceased family members. His only external encounters are with Sugimoto’s party, who eventually realize his true nature as a former convict when they understand that he is the source of the recent bear attacks. His development comes to a tragic end during a confrontation with Sugimoto. Wishing to finally destroy the bear demon inside him, he flees and triggers a poison arrow trap, mortally wounding himself. He dies seemingly at peace, finally freed from his torment. Heita Matsuda enjoys eating crayfish and dislikes the taste of crow meat.
