Description
Kaworu Nagisa is a fictional character from the animated feature film Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, who appears in the story as the Fifth Child, a replacement pilot for the giant biological mecha known as Evangelion Unit 02. He is sent to the special agency Nerv by the secret organization Seele to carry out a critical mission. His background is deeply enigmatic; officially, he was born on September 13, 2000, the exact date of the catastrophic Second Impact, and all records of his past before his arrival at Nerv have been deliberately erased. This mystery is eventually resolved with the revelation of his true identity as the seventeenth and final Angel, whose designated name is Tabris. Unlike the other Angels, he possesses a human-like appearance and the soul of the first Angel, Adam, which had been recovered by Seele and implanted within him.
In terms of personality, Kaworu presents a striking contrast to the series' other characters. He is unusually warm, open, and emotionally expressive, showing an unconditional and sincere sympathy towards others, particularly the protagonist Shinji Ikari. This outward affection masks an underlying otherness, as he frequently refers to humanity with the term "Lilim" and appears to have a perspective that is both deeply interested in and subtly distant from human social protocols. He demonstrates a profound appreciation for human culture, most notably music; he is first seen humming the fourth movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, "Ode to Joy," which he considers the finest achievement of human civilization.
Kaworu's primary motivation is initially ambiguous but is driven by his nature as an Angel. His mission from Seele and his own instinct compel him to attempt to reunite with Adam, the being from whom he was born, whom he believes is kept within the deepest levels of Nerv's headquarters. His role in the story of Death & Rebirth is therefore dual-layered: on the surface, he is a friendly and highly talented new pilot who forms a critical bond with Shinji, offering him the unconditional acceptance and affection he has long craved. Beneath this, he is the final enemy of humanity, whose actions threaten to initiate a cataclysm. Using his powers as an Angel, he takes control of Evangelion Unit 02 and descends to the restricted area known as Terminal Dogma to make contact with Adam.
His key relationships are centered almost entirely on Shinji Ikari. Kaworu connects with Shinji on a profound level, demonstrating an unsettling degree of insight into his loneliness and emotional state. He tells Shinji that he loves him, establishing a relationship of great emotional intimacy that is complex and debated. This friendship becomes the tragic core of his narrative development. Upon reaching the heart of Terminal Dogma, Kaworu makes a pivotal discovery: the giant entity crucified there is not Adam, but the second Angel, Lilith, the progenitor of humanity. Faced with the choice between fulfilling his mission as an Angel and preserving the human race that descends from Lilith, he chooses the latter. In his final development, he renounces his purpose and requests that Shinji kill him to prevent the destruction of mankind, demonstrating a level of free will and compassion that transcends his programmed identity as an Angel. His death at Shinji's hands is a moment of immense emotional trauma for the protagonist.
Kaworu possesses a range of notable abilities that distinguish him from both humans and other Angels. His most prominent power is his exceptionally strong Absolute Terror Field, an energy barrier that is both defensive and can be used for other applications such as levitation. He demonstrates a unique capacity to control and synchronize with an Evangelion from the outside, even without a pilot entry plug, by manipulating its movements as if it were an extension of his own body. As the vessel for Adam's soul, his own soul is implied to be billions of years old, granting him a perspective that is far from human despite his youthful appearance. He can also use his AT Field to block all communications and filter electromagnetic radiation, showcasing the immense power he wields.
