Description
Ichiro Mizusawa is a character who appears in the fourth theatrical film for the Slam Dunk series. He is a young basketball player who was a student at Tomigaoka Junior High School, the same school that Kaede Rukawa had attended before entering Shohoku High School. Following Rukawa's departure, Mizusawa became the star player of the Tomigaoka team and eventually succeeded the player Yoshida as the team's captain. His personal aspiration was to graduate from junior high, join Rukawa at Shohoku High School, and together compete for the national championship.
Mizusawa's life and aspirations are dramatically altered when he is diagnosed with articular tuberculosis in his right leg. This condition is described as a crippling leg problem that threatens to end his ability to play basketball. This diagnosis creates the central conflict of the film, as it places his dream of playing alongside his idol in jeopardy.
Despite his serious condition, Mizusawa maintains a deep and abiding desire to play one final game with Rukawa before his illness potentially prevents him from ever playing again. He first appears in the story watching a game between Shohoku and Kainan and greets Rukawa in the hallway after the match. A key element of his personality is his admiration for Rukawa, who he looks up to as a role model. His wish to play alongside Rukawa is a powerful motivating force that drives the events of the narrative.
His situation comes to the attention of the Shohoku team through Haruko Akagi, who is friends with Mizusawa's sister, Akane. After learning about his condition and his wish, Hanamichi Sakuragi takes it upon himself to help the boy, setting out to fulfill his desire for one last game. The Shohoku team eventually agrees to organize a scrimmage that allows Mizusawa to participate. This scrimmage is arranged as a match between two mixed teams, with Mizusawa placed on the red team alongside players like Sakuragi, Hisashi Mitsui, Ryota Miyagi, and Yasuda, while Rukawa plays on the white team with Takenori Akagi, Kiminobu Kogure, and others. His role in the story is thus not as a regular competitor but as a catalyst for a match that focuses on camaraderie and fulfilling a difficult wish, showcasing the impact he has on the main characters.
Mizusawa's development is centered on his emotional journey of coming to terms with a career-ending injury while holding onto the hope of one final moment of glory on the court. His interaction with Rukawa is initially tense, as Rukawa is reluctant to play with a junior high student and competes fiercely against him, but the overall arc leads to the realization of his dream to share the court with the player he admires. In terms of abilities, Mizusawa is portrayed as a highly talented player, having earned the status of star and captain of his junior high school team after Rukawa's departure, which indicates a high level of skill and leadership. However, his specific playing style or techniques are not detailed, as the narrative focuses more on his medical condition and his heartfelt desire for one final game.
