Description
Hiro Hirono is a central character in the story, introduced as a seventeen-year-old junior attending Otobane Academy in the fictional Japanese city of Otowa. He lives alone, maintaining a small apartment that serves as both his living space and his primary workplace. His most defining characteristic is his professional career as a manga artist, a striking juxtaposition to his life as a high school student. To keep his professional life private, he works under the pen name Nagi Shindou, a pseudonym he created by combining the given name of his older sister, Nagi, with the family name of his childhood friend, Kei Shindou. He specializes in shōjo manga, a genre of comics aimed at young girls, which is an unusual but successful path for a teenage boy. His motivation to become a manga artist stems from his childhood experiences with the Shindou twins, Kei and Chihiro, who inspired him to combine his love for drawing with storytelling.

Hiro comes from a family of artists; his father and his sister Nagi are both respected traditional artists, and this artistic lineage has placed certain expectations on him, though his chosen medium of manga was initially a point of contention with his father. He left home to pursue his dream independently and now supports himself entirely through his manga work. This financial pressure, combined with the demanding deadlines of a professional artist, leads him to neglect his school attendance, focusing almost all his energy on his craft.

In terms of personality, Hiro is diligent and possesses a kind heart, but he often comes across as blunt, cynical, and stubborn in his daily interactions. His most significant personal flaw is a chronic indecisiveness. This manifests in his struggle to balance his professional and academic life, but most critically, it defines his romantic relationships. He has a long-standing, close, and platonic relationship with his childhood friend and neighbor, Kei Shindou. Kei effectively manages his life, using her key to his apartment to wake him for school, clean his home, and bring him meals, acting as a surrogate sister and mother figure while secretly harboring romantic feelings for him. This delicate balance is upended with the arrival of Miyako Miyamura. After a chance encounter on Christmas night where Miyako steals his bicycle to chase a thief, she soon transfers to his school and aggressively pursues a romantic relationship with him, creating a tense love triangle that forces Hiro to confront his inability to choose between the safety of his past with Kei and the exhilarating uncertainty of his present with Miyako.

Throughout the story, Hiro is also grappling with a serious physical ailment: painful tendonitis in his drawing arm, which is progressively worsening and threatens to end his career as a manga artist. This adds a layer of urgency to his work, as he fears every page he draws might be one of his last. As the pain becomes more severe, his older sister Nagi steps in to act as his assistant, handling much of the finishing work to provide him with some relief.

Hiro's role in the narrative is that of a young creator forced to mature quickly, not only under the weight of his professional ambitions and physical limits but also due to the emotional consequences of his indecisiveness. His relationships with Miyako and Kei push him to move beyond his half-hearted approach to life and commit to a choice, forcing him to accept that he cannot please everyone and that living fully requires accepting loss. Despite his struggles in romance and daily life, his notable ability remains his talent as a manga artist, a skill that defines his identity, provides his income, and serves as the primary lens through which he views the world.
