Description
Azusa Mukami is the youngest of the four adoptive Mukami brothers. He stands 170 centimeters tall, has a slender build, and is characterized by his dark, greenish-gray hair. His body is often marked with wounds and wrapped in bandages, which are not just physical features but hold deep personal significance for him. He is a third-year student at Ryoutei Academy.

Azusa’s personality is a complex mix of timidity and intensity. He speaks slowly and often comes across as weak and clingy. However, beneath this hesitant exterior lies a remarkably persistent individual who will continue to pursue a course of action until he gets his way. His most defining characteristic is his profound masochism. He has a genuine fondness for being injured and mistreated, a trait that can be disturbing to those around him. This love of pain extends to a habit of self-harm, as he uses physical suffering to feel alive and to confirm his own existence. He is also a collector of knives, an interest that aligns with his fixation on pain and wounds.

The roots of Azusa's unusual psychology lie in a deeply tragic childhood. He spent his early years alone, frequently bullied by other children. During a period of homelessness, he was taken in by a family of thieves, which included three children named Justin, Melissa, and Christina. These three would regularly beat him. To cope with the loneliness and despair, Azusa reinterpreted the abuse as a form of attention and affection. He convinced himself that the pain he felt was proof that he was wanted and that his life had value. When his bullies were eventually killed, he was not relieved but devastated, as he had lost the very people who made him feel needed. After this, he ended up in an orphanage where he met Ruki, Kou, and Yuma. All four were eventually saved from their miserable existence by Karlheinz, the Vampire King, who turned them into vampires. As a result, Azusa views his own scars as his friends, giving them the names of his childhood abusers, with the three most prominent marks on his arm representing Justin, Melissa, and Christina.

In the story, Azusa's primary motivation is his desperate, all-consuming search for a reason to live. He is driven by an intense fear of being unwanted and alone, a state he considers worse than death. The female protagonist, Yui Komori, becomes the focal point of this need. Unlike his brothers who may use demeaning language, Azusa treats her with a certain level of decency, even calling her by her name with an honorific. He quickly becomes attached to her, believing that she is similar to him and will understand his need for pain. His feelings for her quickly evolve into a fierce and possessive protectiveness, as he sees her as his own and becomes determined to shield her from harm, sometimes putting himself in grave danger to do so.

Azusa’s relationships with his adoptive brothers are complex and central to his development. As the youngest, he is looked after, often by Yuma, who acts as a protective older brother. However, his masochistic tendencies frequently exasperate the others. Ruki, the leader of the group, is displeased by Azusa's self-destructive nature and often tries to correct him, sometimes with physical force. Kou finds Azusa to be a "problematic" child. Azusa himself sometimes provokes his brothers, hoping to receive a beating from them, with Yuma’s punches being his favorite. Despite these frictions, a strong bond of brotherhood exists between them. In moments of crisis, they work together and support each other, reminding Azusa that he is not alone and that their collective strength is what makes them powerful.

Throughout his narrative arc, Azusa undergoes significant development. Initially consumed by a mindset that equates pain with love and existence, his journey with Yui leads him toward a degree of self-awareness and healing. A pivotal moment occurs when he suffers a severe injury from a silver bullet. When Yui urges him to have his arm amputated to save his life, he initially resists, seeing the loss of his wounded arm as the loss of a part of himself. It is through her insistence and explanation that there are other ways to confirm one's existence beyond physical pain that he finally concedes. This marks a turning point where his need for self-destruction begins to transform into a desire to protect. In one possible conclusion to his story, Yui's powerful love for him awakens her own vampire abilities, and they go on to build a family together, naming their three children after his original bullies as a way of reclaiming his past.

As a vampire, Azusa possesses the standard abilities of his kind, including superhuman strength, speed, and enhanced senses, though his powers are not as great as those of a pureblood. He also has the ability to teleport, allowing him to appear in different locations seemingly from out of thin air. Despite being a vampire, his former humanity remains evident; he is comfortable in sunlight and continues to enjoy human food, with his favorite being the spicy seasoning Shichimi Togarashi.
