Description
Kousuke Asazuki is a prominent member of the Blade Children, a group of genetically engineered individuals marked by the absence of a rib and hunted for the potential danger they represent. Among his peers, he stands out as the most overtly aggressive, impulsive, and physically confrontational. His personality is defined by a stubborn, strong-willed nature and a hair-trigger temper. Patience is not his strength; he prefers to tackle threats head-on rather than hide or negotiate, which makes him the primary enforcer of the Blade Children’s rare violent tasks. This hot-headedness frequently puts him at odds with the more calculating Eyes Rutherford, as Kousuke openly distrusts him and the two regularly clash.

Underneath the brash exterior, Kousuke possesses genuine intelligence. He skipped multiple grades in elementary school and later educated himself to a secondary-school level despite dropping out. The dropout occurred after an incident at Morikawa High School when he was fourteen: he assaulted a teacher and subsequently vanished from the academic system. In his early childhood, his mother died in an accident when he was three years old, and his father’s identity remains unknown, leaving him with a fractured family background that likely hardens his survivalist outlook.

Kousuke’s motivation is rooted in the Blade Children’s desperate struggle for survival against their Hunters. He does not shy away from killing, viewing it sometimes as a necessary measure, yet he also craves a life free from the curse that defines his existence. A significant emotional anchor for him is his relationship with Ryoko Takamachi. He harbors deep, protective feelings for her, and to avoid upsetting her, he makes conscious efforts to restrain his lethal impulses, favoring non-fatal physical force when possible. This dynamic reveals a softer, more caring side beneath his abrasive manner. His interactions with Rio Takeuchi are more volatile; she routinely calls him stupid, and they bicker fiercely, though a layered fondness exists between them. In the broader ensemble, Kousuke gradually moves from a purely antagonistic or distrustful stance toward Ayumu Narumi to a tentative acceptance, as Ayumu’s role as a potential savior of the Blade Children becomes evident.

Across the story, Kousuke’s development is most visible in his evolving self-control. Initially defined almost entirely by violence and instinct, he learns to moderate his behavior for the sake of those he cares about, especially Ryoko. While he remains a fierce combatant and never loses his edge, he shows an increasing willingness to cooperate and to pursue a peaceful resolution for the Blade Children. His abilities include advanced hand-to-hand combat, practical assassination skills, and a sharp, adaptive mind that—though less academically polished than some of his companions—makes him a dangerous and effective operative. Physically, he is recognized by his red hair, green eyes, and glasses, often dressed in turtlenecks.
