TV-Series
Description
Heihachi Hayashida is a samurai with a genial and amiable nature who would much rather eat rice than engage in combat. Discovered while chopping wood in exchange for food or interesting devices, he is the third samurai to join the group defending Kanna Village. Despite his cheerful and often smiling demeanor, Heihachi possesses practical skills that prove essential to the team's survival.
His background is rooted in the Great War, where he deliberately took a position as a combat engineer to stay away from the front lines while still utilizing his mechanical talents. This past, however, hides a deep personal shame, as he once betrayed his own unit by leaking information to the enemy, an act which resulted in the deaths of all his comrades. This history fuels a deep and uncompromising hatred for traitors, making him quick to judge and unforgiving when confronted with similar betrayal.
Motivated by a desire for a peaceful life, Heihachi values hard work and good karma, often giving more than he receives in any trade. His most defining personal trait is an extraordinary love for rice; he can identify its origin by taste alone and believes in the old tradition of the seven rice kami, or spirits, residing within every grain. This philosophy gives him a unique perspective on life and death, believing the next world to be a paradise without bandits. He carries a sword with a teru teru bozu, a small weather charm, hanging from the hilt.
Within the story, Heihachi serves as the group's primary mechanic and combat engineer. Using his ingenuity and creativity, he orchestrates the construction of medieval-type weapons and defenses, including ballistae and various traps, to fight against the giant mechanized Nobuseri. He is a quick thinker who can make functional repairs with limited tools, though his work often prioritizes function over fine aesthetics. Though a trained swordsman, he is not as experienced in direct frontline combat as some of his allies and prefers to support from the rear, operating weapons or giving orders. He is physically stronger and faster than his relaxed appearance suggests, able to leap great heights and slice through metal.
Key relationships influence his development, particularly with the leader Kambei Shimada. Through Kambei's example, Heihachi grows to become more forgiving and understanding, learning to temper his absolute hatred for traitors. He is recruited by Gorobei Katayama, who observes his wood-chopping skill and appreciates his unique principle of running away from unwinnable fights. Heihachi works closely with the young samurai Katsushiro Okamoto in the final battle. His fate is sealed during the assault on the Capital, where he is crushed by a large iron bar. Facing death, he maintains his jovial spirit and dies with a smile, his final words referring to the comforting notion that he will be found in the rice.
