Description
Ganta Igarashi is the protagonist of his story, a character who begins as an ordinary middle school student before being thrust into a brutal and unjust world. Ganta is a boy of fourteen years with black, messy hair and gray eyes. Originally an unremarkable and harmless student, his life is shattered when a mysterious being he calls the "Red Man" slaughters his entire class in front of him, leaving Ganta as the sole survivor. The Red Man does not kill him, however, instead implanting a strange red crystal into Ganta's chest before disappearing. Ganta is subsequently framed for the massacre, declared guilty in a rigged trial, and sentenced to death at a notorious and violent private prison known as Deadman Wonderland.

Upon arriving at the prison, Ganta is initially confused, terrified, and overwhelmed by the insanity and brutality of his new environment. Despite his fear, a core part of his personality is a strong sense of justice and a refusal to accept the twisted reality around him, which often leads him to speak out against the cruelty of the prison guards. As he struggles to survive, Ganta proves himself to be surprisingly resilient and determined. His primary motivation becomes twofold: to prove his innocence and to track down the Red Man to exact revenge for the murder of his friends. This vengeful drive is a powerful force for him for much of his journey.

The red crystal implanted in Ganta's chest awakens a power known as a "Branch of Sin," transforming him into a Deadman. His specific ability allows him to control his own blood, gathering it in the palm of his hand and firing it at high velocity like a bullet. This power is dubbed the "Ganta Gun" by another inmate. While advantageous as a long-range attack, the ability has a significant drawback; unlike other Deadmen who can recycle their blood, Ganta expends his own with each shot. Because of his small stature, excessive use of his power risks severe blood loss, fainting, and could eventually prove fatal. As his abilities evolve, he develops a much more powerful but less controllable blast, called the "Ganbare Gun," which causes a strange tattoo-like pattern to spread across his body and inflicts physical pain with each use. This enhanced power is far more destructive but slowly destroys his body from within.

Within the prison, Ganta forges several key relationships that are central to his development. The most significant is with a mysterious, energetic, and childlike albino girl named Shiro, who seems to know him and appears freely anywhere in the prison. She becomes his closest friend and a source of comfort and hope in the darkness, helping him adapt to his new life. Ganta also forms a rivalry and later a grudging respect for Senji Kiyomasa, a powerful and experienced Deadman whom Ganta defeats in his first deadly carnival fight. Ganta joins a resistance group called Scar Chain in an attempt to escape and expose the prison's illegal activities. Throughout these trials, he reveals a deep care for his friends and allies, and his actions are often driven by a desire to protect them.

Ganta undergoes significant development as the story progresses. He evolves from a frightened, vengeful boy into a more hardened and determined survivor, learning to live with the insanity of Deadman Wonderland. His worldview is shattered when he discovers the devastating truth: the Red Man he has sworn to kill and his beloved friend Shiro are the same person. This revelation creates immense internal conflict, as his feelings of love for Shiro war with his hatred for the monster who killed his friends. He later uncovers even more painful truths about his past, learning that his mother was a researcher who originally intended to use him as a test subject but substituted Shiro in his place. Ganta had also blocked out his childhood memories of Shiro due to the trauma of witnessing her violent outbursts. Ultimately, his journey becomes one of accepting this complex reality, understanding Shiro's suffering, and deciding her fate, which culminates in a final confrontation where he resolves to both save her and stop her.
