TV-Series
Description
Jr., whose original name is Rubedo, is a primary protagonist and a playable character in the Xenosaga series. As the co-director of the Kukai Foundation and the commander of the massive spacecraft Durandal, he holds a position of significant authority. His physical appearance is notably misleading, as he possesses the body of a young boy, featuring red hair, blue eyes, and a distinctive tear-shaped earring on his left ear. The number 666 is engraved on his left palm, a remnant of his origins. Despite his youthful appearance, he is an adult, with sources indicating he is 26 years old during the main events, having the ability to control his cellular growth to remain looking around the age of twelve.
His personality is a blend of youthful energy and mature responsibility. Jr. is empathetic and friendly, known for his cocky and sarcastic wit, especially in battle, and he has a strong zero-tolerance policy for cruelty. He has a deep-seated guilt stemming from his past, which fuels his desire to protect others, particularly those suffering under the Life Recycling Act. To compensate for his short stature, which is a source of some insecurity, he cultivates anachronistic hobbies, developing a fondness for collecting antique guns like his signature Makarov pistols, as well as old books and action movies. He dislikes being referred to by his original name, Rubedo, as it reminds him of his origin as a living weapon and he believes it is wrong to treat living beings as mere objects.
Jr. was created as a Designer Child, specifically an U.R.T.V. or U-DO Retro Virus unit, designed to be an anti-thesis to the dangerous phenomenon known as U-DO. As one of the special variant units, he was born as a conjoined twin to Albedo, and the two share a powerful, traumatic connection. His motivations are largely driven by the guilt he carries from the Miltian Conflict, a disaster from his past. As the leader of the U.R.T.V.s during that mission, he panicked at a vision of the planet's destruction and severed the psychic link protecting his comrades. This act resulted in many of his fellow U.R.T.V.s being driven mad or killed by U-DO, including his brother Albedo. This event defines his character, and he spends much of the story trying to atone for what he perceives as his failure. He is also driven by a promise made to a girl named Sakura Mizrahi in the past to protect her mother, Juli, and her younger sister, the Realian MOMO. This promise forges a strong, mentor-like relationship with MOMO.
Within the narrative, Jr. serves as a key figure whose personal history is directly tied to the central conflict. His role involves confronting his past, particularly his deranged brother Albedo, who serves as a primary antagonist. The relationship with Albedo is the most significant and tortured of Jr.'s life; Albedo constantly taunts him about the Miltian Conflict, forcing him to face his guilt and responsibility. Alongside his other brother, Gaignun Kukai (formerly known as Nigredo), Jr. was rescued after the Miltian Conflict and taken in by Helmer, the leader of Second Miltia. Together, Jr. and Gaignun built the Kukai Foundation as a humanitarian organization. While Gaignun handles the political side, Jr. acts as the military force, leading missions and investigations. His development throughout the story involves learning to reconcile with the pain of his past instead of just running from it, culminating in a final, sorrowful confrontation with Albedo where he ultimately has to use his latent powers to stop him.
As an U.R.T.V., especially one of the variant models, Jr. possesses a number of notable abilities. He has innate telepathic powers, including the ability to share thoughts with his fellow U.R.T.V. brothers. His most significant and volatile power is known as the Red Dragon, described as a blazing red aura or wave of energy that manifests during moments of extreme emotional stress or rage. This power dramatically boosts his combat abilities, though it can also weaken his self-control. When piloting in combat, he commands the E.S. Asher, a humanoid mecha geared toward long-range combat. For ground battles, he prefers using his antique pistols in tandem, or akimbo, and is a master of gunplay. He can also use Ether, the game's form of energy-based magic, which allows him to perform elemental attacks ranging from fire to beam attacks, as well as provide healing and support for his allies.
