TV-Series
Description
Ayato Naoi is first introduced as the student council vice president in the afterlife school. He is easily recognized by his formal black school uniform and a distinctive black cap. Initially, he appears to be a strict and obedient authority figure, but this exterior masks a far more complex and troubled individual.
Born as the younger of twin brothers in a family of renowned potters, Naoi lived in the shadow of his older sibling, Kento, who was hailed as a prodigy. While his brother received their father's attention and rigorous training, Naoi was largely neglected and left to pass the time alone. A childhood accident, in which both brothers fell from a tree, proved to be the pivotal tragedy of his life. Kento died, but his father, to preserve the family’s honor and legacy, made a devastating decision. He declared that it was Ayato who had perished, forcing Naoi to abandon his own identity and live the rest of his life as his deceased brother. Under this false name, Naoi was subjected to the same harsh, Spartan training meant for the gifted son. He eventually won a prize for his pottery, earning a rare moment of praise from his father, but this sense of accomplishment was short-lived. His father soon fell ill, and Naoi was left to care for him, ultimately losing the man who had defined, and erased, his existence. With no identity of his own and a life he felt was a complete sham, Naoi arrived in the afterlife.
Naoi's personality is defined by a profound arrogance and a desperate need for recognition. He is cold, calculating, and a decisive man of action. Believing that those who have endured a painful life have the right to become gods in this world, he proclaims himself as the deity of the afterlife school. This god complex is a defense mechanism, a way for him to assert control and finally receive the acknowledgment he was always denied. He refers to everyone else as commoners, treating them with open contempt. However, this haughty exterior shatters completely in the presence of Yuzuru Otonashi, to whom he becomes unfailingly loyal and respectful, revealing a more vulnerable and obsessive side.
In the story, Naoi serves as a significant antagonist before undergoing a dramatic transformation. After the previous student council president is removed, Naoi ascends to the position of acting president. He uses his authority to impose his iron will, cruelly exploiting ordinary students, who are non-player characters, to attack the Afterlife Battlefront. His goal is to use his power to force the members of the Battlefront to disappear by overwriting their painful memories with happy, but fake, ones. He nearly succeeds in annihilating the entire Battlefront, but is stopped by Otonashi. In a pivotal confrontation, Otonashi embraces him and forcefully acknowledges his struggles, telling Naoi that his life was real and that he, as himself, exists. This simple act of recognition is what Naoi had craved his entire existence, and it breaks through his delusions of godhood.
His key relationships are centered on this event. His bond with Otonashi is the most important, shifting from adversarial to one of deep gratitude and devotion. He joins the Battlefront at Otonashi's side, speaking to him with deference while maintaining his high-handed and sarcastic attitude toward almost everyone else, especially Hinata, who becomes a friendly rival. While he respects the group's leader, Yuri Nakamura, his loyalty is ultimately to Otonashi.
Naoi's development is the core of his character. He transforms from a tyrannical, self-proclaimed god who seeks to erase others into a loyal, if still prickly, ally who has accepted his past. He learns that his life, however painful and filled with borrowed identity, had value, and he is finally able to find peace and move on, expressing his sincere thanks to Otonashi before disappearing from the afterlife.
A notable ability Naoi possesses is hypnotism, which he studied for years. He can use this power to control the minds of ordinary students, turning them into a compliant army. He also employs it for more precise tasks, such as altering memories or helping Otonashi recover his own forgotten past. In combat, he is also shown wielding a pair of pistols with considerable skill.
