Description
Onigiri is a supporting character in the anime Air Gear, first introduced as one of the protagonist Itsuki Minami's childhood friends and schoolmates. He is one of the founding members of the Air Treck team Kogarasumaru, joining Ikki's circle alongside their mutual friend Kazuma Mikura and remaining a recurring presence throughout the story. His most distinctive feature is his head, which is literally shaped like an onigiri, the Japanese rice ball that gives him his name. He has black hair cut to ear length, gray eyes, and a flat nose, and he typically wears a leather jacket and matching pants in keeping with the street-oriented image of the group.
In terms of personality, Onigiri is a self-declared pervert whose behavior is frequently compared to that of a pig. He habitually uses his unusual riding style to look up the skirts of female classmates, much to their annoyance, and he often makes lecherous comments or finds himself in embarrassing situations. Beneath this comic exterior, however, he is a loyal friend and a dependable teammate. He cares about Ikki and the rest of Kogarasumaru, and he takes his role in the team seriously enough to train alongside the others when the group faces stronger opponents.
Onigiri's motivations center mainly on friendship and self-improvement. He follows Ikki into the competitive world of Air Treck riding not out of personal ambition to become a king, but out of loyalty to his childhood friend and a desire to keep up with the escalating challenges the team takes on. His perverted impulses often serve as comic motivation in contrast to the more serious goals of his teammates, yet he is consistently willing to put himself at risk for the sake of the group.
His role in the story is primarily that of comic relief and loyal supporting teammate. While he is not one of the central fighters in the major battles, he is present during many of the team's key moments, providing levity and reinforcing the bond between Ikki and his oldest friends. He shares a class with Ikki at school, and his interactions with the female students there are a running joke. His relationship with Ikki is defined by long friendship, and he interacts with the other Kogarasumaru members as a close ally even when his antics test their patience.
Onigiri's development in the story is gradual. Early on, he is portrayed mostly as a gag character with an absurd riding technique. As the series progresses, however, he begins to train seriously with his friends in order to become stronger, and his abilities evolve accordingly. Later appearances depict him in a more exaggerated, almost supernatural light, including imagery of him as an upside-down figure with apparent powers, which plays on the same visual gag as his riding style while reflecting his growth as a rider.
His notable abilities are closely tied to his strange approach to Air Treck. Unlike most riders, who use two Air Trecks, Onigiri rides using only a single one while balanced upside down on his head. This allows him to flail his legs back and forth as a weapon when he is close to an opponent, though it also carries the risk of falling and scraping along the ground on the point of his head. He also has an unusual technique that uses his perspiration, typically released during his perverted moments, to create illusions that affect the senses of his enemies. Many of his developed techniques focus on sensory interference and illusion-making rather than direct physical power. He is additionally said to follow the Smell Road, one of the many rider paths within the Air Treck world, and he is capable of matching or even exceeding the speed of his faster teammates over short bursts when sufficiently motivated.
