Description
Nuwangi is a young man from the nation of Kenashikourupe who appears as an antagonist in the early part of the story, chiefly in the region surrounding the village of Yamayura. He is the son of Sasante, a local feudal lord whose territory included Yamayura, and the nephew of Inkalla, the late emperor of Kenashikourupe, which also makes him the cousin of Inkalla's daughter Kamuchataal. Physically, he is a teenage boy with gray-white hair, blue eyes, and the animal-like ears characteristic of the people of the setting.

As a child, Nuwangi lived in Yamayura and was raised by the elder Tusukuru, the same woman who cared for Eruruu. In those years he was reserved and docile, and he grew up as Eruruu's childhood friend with a quiet attachment to her. His personality changes dramatically after his father takes him to the capital, where the luxuries of court life gradually spoil him. By the time he returns to the countryside, he is arrogant, self-important, and openly contemptuous of ordinary villagers, whom he regards as beneath him. He believes his rank entitles him to anything he desires, including Eruruu herself, and he freely abuses the authority he received from his father and uncle. Beneath this bluster, however, he is cowardly, fearing death and discomforted by the sight of Eruruu sad.

His role in the story is that of an early obstacle and instigator of conflict. He comes to Yamayura to collect taxes on behalf of his family and treats the villagers and Hakuowlo with disdain. After a quarrel, he attempts to punch Hakuowlo, but the blow is easily stopped, and he later vents his frustration by vandalizing a local shrine dedicated to Mutikapa. As the conflict escalates, he seizes the position of samurai general from Benawi and uses a personal army to crush villages, including settlements that had not taken Hakuowlo's side. His cruelty and the suffering he inflicts contribute directly to the rebellion that forms against the rule he represents.

His most significant relationship is with Eruruu. Although he views her as something he has a right to claim, he retains a lingering fear of her disapproval and is visibly shaken by her distress. After Hakuowlo defeats him in battle, Nuwangi is brought to the rebel headquarters for judgment. The decision falls to Eruruu, who chooses mercy and releases him without punishment. Her forgiveness leaves him shocked and bewildered, and he departs alone down a road into the morning mist, never appearing in the story again. That final moment marks the end of his development, transforming him from a spoiled and cruel official into a broken figure stripped of his status.

Nuwangi has no special supernatural abilities. His power rests entirely on his noble rank, his family connections, and the soldiers under his command, and he shows little personal prowess in combat, being easily overpowered by Hakuowlo. His overall trajectory is one of decline, from a gentle and quiet child into an entitled and abusive officer, followed by a single moment of grace in which the compassion of his childhood friend undoes everything he had become.
