Description
Pope Alessandro XVIII, whose papal name in Latin is Alexander XVIII, is the 399th Pope of the Catholic Church in the world of Trinity Blood. He is the legitimate son of the previous pontiff, Gregorio XXX, and a noblewoman from the Colonna family, one of Rome's oldest aristocratic houses. When his father died in 3055 AD, the succession was contested. His uncle, Archbishop Alfonso d'Este, was the strongest candidate for the throne of Saint Peter, and Alessandro was elevated to the papacy largely through the maneuvering of his elder half-siblings, Cardinal Caterina Sforza and Cardinal Francesco di Medici. He did not choose the office for himself and was thrust into it while still a teenager, a fact that shapes his entire character.

As Pope, Alessandro is the official head of state of the Vatican Domain, the sovereign territory of the Catholic Church, and he occupies the highest religious and political office in the human sphere. In the early years of his pontificate he is a de facto figurehead: his youth, inexperience, and timid nature mean that the real exercise of power falls to those around him, and he is quietly regarded by many in the Vatican as a ceremonial ornament rather than a true ruler. His position is largely symbolic, and he is acutely aware of the gap between the authority he is supposed to hold and his own inability to command it.

In personality, Alessandro is a nervous and easily frightened young man who lacks conviction and confidence in himself. He suffers from a severe fear of other people and cannot handle shouting, especially when it is directed at him, and he is fragile in both body and temperament. Beneath this anxiety, however, he has a strong sense of kindness and gentleness, and he genuinely wishes to be good and to act rightly even though he doubts his own strength to do so. His motivation is not ambition; he never sought the papacy and would have preferred a quieter life, but he tries to endure the burden placed on him out of a sense of duty and a desire not to disappoint those who believe in him.

Alessandro constantly turns to his elder half-siblings for guidance and support. Caterina, the founder and leader of the Vatican's special operations section, and Francesco, who commands the Church's military forces, are the pillars he leans on in virtually every difficult decision, even though this reliance keeps him dependent on them. His relationship with his uncle Alfonso d'Este is defined by the political rivalry over the succession, with the uncle having been passed over in favor of the nephew. Through his contact with Sister Esther Blanchett and with the agents of the Papal State Affairs Special Operations Section, including the wandering priest Abel Nightroad, Alessandro is gradually exposed to the wider world and to the harsh realities of the conflict between humans and the long-lived Methuselah. These experiences slowly change him, and he begins to grow beyond his initial role as a passive figurehead, showing early signs of greater resolve, maturity, and willingness to stand by his own convictions.

Alessandro possesses no notable combat or supernatural abilities; his physical frailty is remarked upon throughout the story, and he cannot defend himself in any direct confrontation. His significance lies entirely in his symbolic and political authority as the youthful and vulnerable leader of the Catholic Church, and in the gradual inner growth that allows him to become something more than a puppet of the factions around him.
