Description
Kozo Fuyutsuki is the Deputy Commander of NERV in Evangelion 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, serving as the right-hand man and most trusted subordinate of Commander Gendo Ikari. He is a middle-aged man with greying hair and glasses, and his bearing is scholarly and composed. Throughout the film, he stands near Gendo in the command center, offering calm, pragmatic observations and counsel. When Gendo temporarily leaves to meet Shinji, Fuyutsuki seamlessly takes charge of the situation, directing NERV's operations against the Angel with steady authority.
His personality is restrained and introspective; he rarely displays strong emotion, though his measured words and subtle expressions occasionally hint at deeper awareness and quiet misgivings. He is noticeably less harsh than Gendo and seems to carry a latent humanitarian concern, even if he does not openly challenge decisions. His motivations are rooted in a complicated past that predates the film. Before joining NERV, he was a professor of metaphysical biology at Kyoto University, where he met the young bioengineering student Yui Ikari and, through her, Gendo Rokubungi. A deep, unspoken admiration for Yui, combined with his discovery of the truths behind Second Impact and the secretive plans of the organization Seele, led him to a path where he could either be silenced or cooperate. He chose to work alongside Gendo, driven partly by self-preservation and partly by a hope, shared with Gendo, of somehow being reunited with Yui.
In the story, Fuyutsuki's role is chiefly supportive. He manages the administrative and operational command of NERV in Gendo's absence, coordinates tactical responses during Angel attacks, and handles the mundane tasks that Gendo delegates. He interacts only distantly with the Eva pilots, observing their actions with a professional detachment that nonetheless carries a faint undercurrent of fatherly concern. His key relationship is with Gendo, a partnership of mutual utility and shared secrets. He functions as Gendo's confidant and sounding board, less a blind follower than a co-conspirator who is fully aware of the gravity of their work. He does not develop dramatically as a character within this single film, but his presence establishes him as a figure of intellectual weight, hidden personal loss, and reluctant commitment to a course from which he cannot easily retreat. Notable abilities include his strategic composure under pressure, his expert scientific knowledge of the Evangelions and Angels, and his capacity to maintain order within NERV's high-stakes environment.
