Description
Misato Katsuragi serves as the operations director at NERV in Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, holding the rank of lieutenant colonel. She is responsible for coordinating tactical responses against the Angels, directing the Evangelion units in combat, and processing battlefield data alongside the science division headed by her friend Ritsuko Akagi. Despite her high military position, she is a relatively new transfer to Tokyo-3 and occasionally becomes lost within the NERV headquarters.

Misato is the sole survivor of the Katsuragi expedition, a scientific mission led by her father that triggered the catastrophic event known as Second Impact. During the disaster, her father placed her in an escape capsule, saving her life at the cost of his own. This traumatic experience left her with a deep scar across her chest and a complex mixture of resentment and gratitude toward her father. The cross necklace she always wears was given to him just before his death.

Outwardly, Misato displays two contrasting personas. At work, she is sharp, decisive, and fully in command of high-pressure battle situations. At home, she is disorganized, drinks heavily from beer cans, and lives in a cluttered apartment. This carefree and sometimes immature behavior masks a deeply wounded inner self. She avoids emotional intimacy and maintains surface-level relationships as a defense mechanism, a trait described as living so lightly that she barely allows human touch.

Her primary motivation at the start of the story is a desire for vengeance against the Angels, whom she holds responsible for her father’s death and the destruction of the world as it was. This drive sometimes pushes her to take aggressive tactical risks, such as planning Operation Yashima, which uses Japan’s entire power grid to destroy the Angel Ramiel.

Misato takes on a guardian role for the young Eva pilots. She invites Shinji Ikari to live in her apartment after he pilots Unit 01, aware of his strained relationship with his father Gendo. Later, she also houses Asuka Langley Soryu, treating her with maternal care despite Asuka’s hostile attitude. Her relationship with Shinji is especially layered; she tries to be a supportive figure while grappling with her own unresolved issues.

Her romantic history involves Ryoji Kaji, a fellow NERV officer she met in college. She ended their relationship by claiming she loved someone else, but later admitted that she was afraid because Kaji reminded her of her father. Even after rekindling their relationship, she struggles with fear of intimacy and feelings of unworthiness.

Misato possesses strong tactical acumen, quick thinking under fire, and proficiency with firearms, notably a Heckler & Koch USP pistol. She is also an enthusiastic driver, owning a modified sports car that reflects her love of speed.

Within Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Misato’s role is to guide Shinji into the world of NERV, establish the dynamic between her professional duties and personal chaos, and lay the groundwork for the emotional and strategic conflicts that will unfold. Her character embodies the themes of trauma, avoidance, and the struggle to connect with others while carrying an immense burden of guilt and loss.
