Description
Gendo Ikari is the supreme commander of the special agency Nerv, an organization dedicated to defending the city of Tokyo-3 from the Angels. Originally born under the surname Rokubungi, he changed his name to Ikari after marrying Yui Ikari. By the events of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, he is a widower, having lost his wife years earlier during a contact experiment with Evangelion Unit-01.

In appearance, Gendo is a tall man of 48 years with brown hair and a short beard, who wears tinted red glasses and a long, dark uniform jacket that is almost always left open. He is frequently seen with his gloved hands clasped together in front of his face, a pose that has become iconic for the character. His gloves serve a dual purpose, covering severe burns he sustained to his palms while rescuing the pilot Rei Ayanami from a berserk Evangelion Unit-00 prior to the film's events.

Within the narrative of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, Gendo is defined by his cold, pragmatic, and emotionally distant personality. He displays no visible emotional attachment to others and is a man of few words, typically accompanied by his deputy commander, Kozo Fuyutsuki. His behavior is often calculating, as he is singularly focused on achieving his ultimate objectives. This is starkly illustrated during the battle with the Sixth Angel, where he simply watches from the command center as his son Shinji's entry plug reaches dangerous temperatures, showing no visible concern. When Shinji initially fails to defeat the Angel, Gendo immediately orders the replacement of the pilot with Rei, acting on a pragmatic lack of trust in his son's abilities, a decision he only cancels after a direct plea from Misato Katsuragi.

Gendo's central role in the story is as the commander of Nerv, responsible for the strategic defense of Tokyo-3 and for overseeing the Evangelion pilots. His primary motivation is a deep, obsessive love for his deceased wife, Yui. All of his actions, including his work on the secretive Human Instrumentality Project, are directed toward the singular goal of being reunited with her. His treatment of his son, Shinji Ikari, whom he abandoned to live with a teacher shortly after his wife's disappearance, is a direct consequence of this grief-driven obsession. Gendo seems to believe that he only causes his son pain and that distance is preferable, though this distance manifests as a cruel and manipulative coldness.

His key relationships are defined by their utility toward his goal. He sees Shinji not primarily as a son but as a necessary pilot for Unit-01, summoning him to Tokyo-3 for that purpose. In contrast to his relationship with Shinji, Gendo shows a notable concern for the pilot Rei Ayanami, who was created from the genetic material of his wife. He has raised her since childhood and treats her with a level of paternal care he never affords his own son, even sharing meals with her. This concern stems from her resemblance to Yui, whom he sees reflected in the girl.

Gendo possesses no supernatural abilities but is a highly capable strategist and a ruthless manipulator. He is willing to use any person, including his own son, as a pawn to advance his plans. As the commander of Nerv, he has absolute authority over its military, scientific, and personnel resources. His character in Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone does not undergo significant development, remaining consistent with his portrayal as the cold and distant archetype he established in the original television series. He serves as a primary driving force behind the plot, his decisions and orders placing Shinji in the path of danger and forcing him to confront the trauma of their broken relationship.
