Description
Pen-Pen is a small warm-water penguin who lives as the companion of Misato Katsuragi in her Tokyo-3 apartment during the events of Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. He belongs to a type of penguin that has no direct real-world equivalent, though he most closely resembles an erect-crested penguin. He is a genetically altered animal created through advanced experimentation, and his design reflects this unusual origin, as he possesses three retractable claws on each flipper, an anatomical feature found in no naturally occurring bird species. Misato adopted him when the research program that created him ended, taking him into her home rather than allowing him to be discarded. He lives in a specially outfitted refrigerator that functions as his personal quarters, furnished with a bed and a lamp, and he wears a small backpack marked with the identification number BX293A.

In terms of personality and behavior, Pen-Pen displays intelligence that goes far beyond that of an ordinary animal. He watches television, reads newspapers, bathes in hot water, eats human food, and drinks beer from a straw. He appears able to understand much of what happens around him and reacts to household events with a calm, self-possessed demeanor. He is largely independent and manages his own daily comforts, retreating to his refrigerator space when he wants warmth and quiet. Although he does not speak, his routines and responses give him a distinctly expressive presence, and he is generally easygoing and unbothered by the activity of the household.

His motivations are simple and centered on comfort: warmth, food, bathing, and a stable domestic routine. He seeks out hot water and agreeable conditions, and he shows contentment in the company of Misato, with whom he shares a relaxed bond. He is not driven by any larger purpose or conflict; his behavior reflects the needs and preferences of a highly intelligent animal living a comfortable home life.

In the story of the film, Pen-Pen functions as a fixture of Misato's home and a quiet source of everyday life amid the tension surrounding the pilots and their missions. He is part of the domestic space that Shinji Ikari enters when he comes to live with Misato, and his habits create some of the film's lighter moments. In one instance, his presence in the bathroom, where he takes his hot baths, startles Shinji and sends him running out. This kind of incident gives the character a recurring comic role while also showing that the household runs partly according to Pen-Pen's routines. He also appears in relaxed domestic scenes, such as sleeping contentedly alongside Misato, which highlight the warmth of their arrangement.

The relationship between Pen-Pen and Misato is the central attachment of his life. Misato treats him as a family member rather than a simple pet, keeping him safe, providing for his needs, and showing clear fondness for him. In turn, he is a source of company and comfort to her. Pen-Pen's interactions with Shinji are more incidental, as the two share living space and Shinji must adapt to the penguin's unusual habits. There is no antagonism between them, only the gentle oddness of cohabitation.

Pen-Pen does not undergo dramatic development over the course of the film. His role is consistent, as he remains the same composed and clever bird from his first appearance, and the movie does not give him a character arc. Instead, his depth is implied through his established history of adoption and his settled place in Misato's life. His notable abilities include tolerating warm water as a heat-adapted penguin, handling objects with his clawed flippers, reading and comprehending printed material, and managing small tasks such as removing and replacing his backpack. These traits mark him as a unique product of the scientific work that created him and as an distinctive presence in the story.
