Yuriko Yamaguchi
Description
Yuriko Yamaguchi is a Japanese voice actress born on November 21, 1965, in Osaka Prefecture. She is affiliated with the agency Aoni Production. Her career began in the early 1990s, with her debut including minor roles in the anime Crayon Shin-chan in 1992. She is a graduate of the Engeki Kenkyusho drama school.
Yamaguchi is best known for two iconic long-running roles. Since 1999, she has voiced Nico Robin in the One Piece series, a character she has portrayed across the main television anime, numerous films, and original video animations. She also provides the voice for Ritsuko Akagi in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise, a role she has held since the original 1995 television series and reprised in all of the Rebuild of Evangelion films.
Her career includes several other significant and recurring roles. She took over the role of Nurse Joy in the Pokémon anime series starting with episode 245, a part she played for many years across multiple series. Her other notable anime roles include Vados in Dragon Ball Super, Satomi Usami in Kirakira Precure a la Mode, Nora Lemming in Full Metal Panic!, and the voice of Orochimaru when the character was disguised as a woman in Naruto.
Throughout her extensive career, Yamaguchi has frequently collaborated with many prominent voice actors. She has worked most often with Ikue Otani, with 51 recorded collaborations. She has also worked extensively with Kazuya Nakai, Kappei Yamaguchi, Mayumi Tanaka, and Akemi Okamura, her co-stars from One Piece, as well as with other frequent collaborators such as Takehito Koyasu, Cho, and Tomokazu Seki.
Among her achievements, Yamaguchi has maintained her role as Nico Robin for over two decades, becoming deeply associated with the character. She has also voiced the character Nico Olvia, Robin's mother, in the same series. In 2007, she took maternity leave for several months, during which her roles in One Piece and Pokémon were temporarily filled by Yuko Kobayashi and Kikuko Inoue, respectively. A unique detail in her career is that her character, Ritsuko Akagi, shares the same birthday of November 21, which was intentionally set to match the voice actress's own birth date.
