Michel Roy
Description
Michel Roy, also frequently known by the stage name Michel Paje, is a French actor, voice actor, singer, composer, and radio personality. Born on January 2, 1945, in Paris, France, he began his entertainment career in the early 1960s as a singer in the yéyé pop style, finding success with songs like "Nous on est dans le vent" in 1963. After a period in Canada where he hosted a television show and worked as a radio host, he returned to France and worked as a radio speaker for Europe 1. Over time, he transitioned into a career as a composer for advertisements and eventually focused on voice acting.
Michel Roy is most recognized in the field of anime for providing the French voice of Gendo Ikari, the cold and calculating commander of the special agency Nerv. He originated this role in the first French dubbing of the seminal series Neon Genesis Evangelion. He reprised the character for the first French dubbings of the subsequent theatrical films, specifically playing Gendo Ikari in Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (2009) and Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012). His performance as the character is noted as being part of the initial French adaptations of these works.
Beyond his work in anime, Roy had an active period in voice dubbing during the 1990s and early 2000s. He was a recurrent voice actor for actor Rod Steiger in French dubs and also provided voices for actors such as Michael Kitchen, Richard Ashton, and Trace Adkins. Later in his career, he became an official voice for the French news television channel BFM TV. He is also a multi-instrumentalist and composer, having written music for films and television.
