Description
Kôzô Fuyutsuki is a senior figure within Nerv, serving as its Vice Commander under Gendō Ikari. Before joining the organization dedicated to opposing the Angels, he was a professor of metaphysical biology at a university, where he first encountered Gendō—then known as Gendō Rokubungi—and Yui Ikari. His background as an academic gives him a measured, analytical perspective that contrasts with the more secretive and emotionally driven nature of his superior.
In terms of personality, Fuyutsuki is calm, reserved, and pragmatic. He rarely raises his voice or shows open frustration, even in the face of Nerv’s many crises. He carries a quiet, dry wit and a tendency toward weary skepticism, especially regarding Gendō’s methods and the Human Instrumentality Committee. Despite his loyalty, he is not blind to the moral compromises Nerv makes. He often observes events with a critical eye, and he is one of the few people who speaks to Gendō as an equal rather than a subordinate.
Fuyutsuki’s primary motivation is not power or ambition but a deep-seated commitment to fulfilling the legacy of Yui Ikari. He was in love with Yui, or at the very held profound respect and affection for her, and her disappearance into the core of Evangelion Unit-01 shaped the rest of his life. He joined Nerv largely to assist Gendō in carrying out the scenario that Yui envisioned—the Human Instrumentality Project—though he does not share Gendō’s obsessive personal desire to be reunited with her. His loyalty is ultimately to Yui’s wishes rather than to Gendō personally.
In The End of Evangelion, Fuyutsuki’s role becomes more prominent as Seele launches its final assault on Nerv. He helps manage the defense of the headquarters and engages in tense philosophical exchanges with Gendō about the nature of Instrumentality, original sin, and the future of humanity. He is present during the activation of the Marduk Report’s final phase and witnesses the unfolding of Third Impact. When Gendō is betrayed by Rei, Fuyutsuki watches without intervention, his expression suggesting both resignation and a grim sense of justice. Later, he appears during the Instrumentality sequence, where his inner thoughts reveal his unresolved feelings for Yui and his acceptance of the project’s outcome.
Key relationships define much of his character. With Gendō, he shares a bond of mutual necessity—they are collaborators who understand each other’s secrets and sins, but there is no warmth. Fuyutsuki sometimes acts as a conscience or a foil, gently challenging Gendō’s coldness while still following his lead. With Misato Katsuragi and the other Nerv staff, he maintains professional distance; he is respected but not loved. With the children—particularly Shinji Ikari—he shows little direct emotional engagement, though he seems aware of the burden placed on them. His most significant connection is to Yui Ikari, whose presence haunts his memories and decisions.
Development across the series culminates in The End of Evangelion. Fuyutsuki begins as a dutiful second-in-command who suppresses his moral doubts for the sake of a larger plan. By the film’s climax, he has moved from passive compliance to a quiet acknowledgment of the horror and beauty of Instrumentality. He does not undergo a dramatic transformation but rather a revelation: he finally sees the full shape of the plan he helped enable, and he accepts it without trying to stop or alter it.
Notable abilities include his expertise in metaphysical biology, which allows him to understand the theoretical underpinnings of Evangelion technology and the Human Instrumentality Project. He is a capable administrator and strategist, able to coordinate Nerv’s defenses during the Seele invasion despite lacking combat training. His greatest strength is his analytical mind and his ability to remain composed under extreme pressure. He does not pilot an Evangelion or display any supernatural powers; his influence comes from knowledge, experience, and strategic position.
