Description
Asuka Shikinami Langley is a fictional character from the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, first appearing in Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance as the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-02. In the short film Evangelion: 3.0 (-46h), which depicts events set shortly after the Near Third Impact, she is shown as a member of the anti-NERV organization WILLE, operating in a drastically changed world.
Asuka Shikinami Langley is a very proud individual, especially regarding her skills as an Eva pilot. She has a high opinion of both her appearance and her abilities, and she dislikes being looked down upon or told what to do, as she wants to be viewed as an adult and praised for her piloting. She is aggressive and can be very opinionated. This version of Asuka is significantly different from her original series counterpart, Asuka Langley Soryu. Instead of graduating university at age fourteen, she joined the European Air Force, reaching the rank of Captain at that same age. She lacks a fear or hatred of dolls; in fact, she plays with a hand puppet when in low spirits. She never had an obsessive crush on Ryoji Kaji, is more open about her attraction to Shinji Ikari, and willingly helps Rei Ayanami host a dinner party.
In Evangelion: 3.0 (-46h), Asuka is shown with her hair cut short. Her eyes and temples are covered by a grey bandage, which later is replaced by an eye-patch covering her right side. Both coverings display Angel-Sealing Hex Pillars, hinting at her status as an Angel-Human hybrid. Underneath this covering, she has a large craniotomy scar.
Asuka’s role in this specific story is that of an active combatant for WILLE, sent on missions to look for survivors in the aftermath of the Near Third Impact. In this flashback, she is transported to an area by fellow pilot Mari Makinami Illustrious, who pilots Evangelion Unit-02α-EIV while Asuka is aboard. Although Mari has already given her the nickname princess, Asuka is dismissive of her, calling her rookie. Asuka tracks down a younger Midori Kitakami, who is fleeing from awakened creatures called Failures of Infinity. She fights off one of these massive beings to rescue Midori. After saving her, Asuka tells the girl that an idiot is responsible for the devastation, instructing her to fight on if she wants to defeat him. This moment has a profound effect on Midori, who begins to look up to Asuka as a result.
Key relationships for Asuka at this stage include her begrudging tolerance of Mari Makinami Illustrious, whom she treats as a subordinate. Her bond with Misato Katsuragi is also significant, as she joins WILLE under Misato's command. Her feelings toward Shinji Ikari are complex; she blames him for the catastrophic Near Third Impact, referring to him as the idiot responsible for the destruction. Despite her anger, her worry for him runs deep, though she is unable to express it constructively.
Developmentally, the Asuka seen in Evangelion: 3.0 (-46h) is at a transitional point. She is no longer the relatively more open and hopeful girl from earlier films, but she has not yet become the colder, more embittered mercenary she is fourteen years later in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. The physical changes to her body are already manifest, marking her as something other than fully human.
Asuka’s notable abilities include her exceptional piloting skills, which she has honed through her military career. Her status as an Angel-Human hybrid grants her certain powers, evidenced by the glowing of her hidden eye and the Angel-Sealing Pillars that restrain her condition. In combat, she is fierce and resourceful, capable of fighting against monstrous Failures of Infinity even when her Evangelion is badly damaged.
