Description
Megumi Kanzaki serves as the first officer of the Experimental Wave-Motion Ship Ginga, holding the rank of First Lieutenant in the Earth Defense Forces. She is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was a student of the renowned scientist Shiro Sanada. Born on December 4, 2166, she is forty years old at the time of the events in Rebel 3199.

In her role aboard the Ginga, Kanzaki is defined by her unwavering support for the ship's captain, Saki Todo, both in their professional duties and in private matters. This support often manifests through her calm and logical demeanor, which can give others the impression that she is cold or machine-like in her thinking. Despite this exterior, she is described as a good and understanding person who navigates the difficult and seemingly endless repair work on the Ginga at Saturn with natural logical thinking. Her striking appearance has led younger crew members to whisper about her as a witch of anti-aging.

Beneath her composed surface, Kanzaki harbors deep emotional pain and the profound love of a mother for the family she has lost. This hidden well of feeling is a central part of her character and becomes a critical factor in the story. Her motivation is rooted in the memory of her deceased husband and daughter, and she carries a love for them that she values more than herself.

This inner conflict comes to the forefront when she is confronted with the non-fighting battleship Ginga’s systems. When Kanzaki’s heartfelt emotions, particularly her maternal love, resonate with the ship, it triggers a significant event, causing the Ginga to fire its main gun, the Cosmo Reverse. This desperate act is her plea to protect what she loves, even as she offers her own life. However, the effort takes a catastrophic toll on her. She suffers a severe head injury when the Ginga crash-lands and falls into a brain-dead state, her consciousness seemingly trapped in a dream world where she is reunited with her lost family.

Her fate takes a dark turn when she is taken into the custody of the mysterious alien faction known as Dezarium. Initially thought to have no chance of recovery, Kanzaki reappears two weeks later in a seemingly healthy state. In reality, she has been transformed into a poster girl for the Dezarium occupation, actively supporting their agenda. While her body is active, her heart has been left behind, leading Captain Saki Todo to sense that something is profoundly wrong with her. Kanzaki’s body is ultimately used by the Dezarium as a specimen in their experiments, specifically for the restoration of the Cosmo Reverse device, a process from which Holy Leader Scaldart declares she is no longer needed once her contribution is complete.
