Nara-Ō Renge is the reincarnation of the Ashura King, a mighty deity from the heavenly realm Tenjoukai. In the past conflict called the First War of the Heavens, the Ashura King rebelled against Tenjoukai's ruler, Indra, aiming to seize the throne. This rebellion ended in defeat, the destruction of the Ashura realm, and the banishment of the Ashura King's soul to Earth for rebirth.
Reborn on Earth, Renge initially lives as a high school student and skilled martial artist. He retains fragmented memories of his divine past and harbors deep resentment towards Indra. Manipulating events from the shadows, Renge seeks to gather other reincarnated deities, specifically targeting Shurato, Indra's reincarnation, to harness his power for revenge. He orchestrates conflicts to test Shurato, aiming to prematurely awaken Shurato's divine powers and destabilize him.
As the Ashura King, Renge wields immense power, utilizing formidable dark energy attacks and the potent Ashura Armor. He commands the loyalty of other reincarnated Ashura clan members on Earth, forming his own faction. His driving ambition is to reclaim Tenjoukai and overthrow Indra's legacy.
A pivotal betrayal occurs when one of Renge's closest Ashura subordinates, driven by jealousy and ambition, critically wounds him. This near-fatal attack forces Renge into hiding to recover. During his convalescence and reflection, witnessing Shurato's actions and the escalating crisis in Tenjoukai prompts a significant shift in Renge's perspective.
Upon his return, Renge's motivations evolve. While still possessing pride and arrogance, his focus shifts from personal vengeance to confronting the true, greater threat emerging in Tenjoukai: Vishnu's manipulations. He forms an uneasy, pragmatic alliance with Shurato and the other Guardians of Indra, driven by mutual survival and the necessity to protect both Tenjoukai and Earth from annihilation.
Renge fights alongside his former enemies, contributing his immense Ashura power to the final battles. He directly confronts Vishnu, demonstrating his changed allegiance and commitment to the greater good. Following the celestial conflict's resolution and the restoration of balance, Renge chooses to remain in Tenjoukai. He dedicates himself to rebuilding the devastated Ashura realm, seeking redemption for his past actions and forging a new future for his people. This act signifies his acceptance of responsibility and a move away from destructive ambitions.
