Description
Leila is a human vampire hunter and the only female member of the Marcus Brothers, a group of bounty hunters. She is not related to the other brothers by blood but is considered their little sister. Leila joined the Marcus Brothers to avenge her parents. When she was a child, her mother was kidnapped by a vampire and later transformed into one. The townspeople stoned her mother to death, while her father was killed trying to save his wife. Leila watched these events helplessly, and the trauma left her with a deep-seated hatred of vampires and a fear of dying alone and unmourned.

Leila begins the story as a cynical, hardened, and no-nonsense young woman. She is determined to prove herself and does not like being pushed around. She carries a powerful handgun and rides a distinctive single-wheeled motorcycle. She is also skilled with machinery, having invented and built her own battle car and its weapons in the novel version of the story, though this is not directly shown in the film. Her initial motivation is purely revenge, but she also hides a vulnerable core: she believes no one cares about her and that when she dies, nobody will mourn her.

In the story, Leila and the Marcus Brothers are hired by Charlotte Elbourne’s brother to retrieve Charlotte from the vampire nobleman Meier Link, while the dhampir D is also hired by Charlotte’s father. Leila initially distrusts and dislikes D, seeing him as a rival and a cold-blooded killer. Over the course of the hunt, she undergoes significant development. When she first meets Charlotte, she reacts with anger and violence, slapping the girl and berating her for choosing to run away with a vampire. This behavior is later revealed to be a trauma response, as Leila is subconsciously lashing out at her own younger self. As the chase continues, Leila witnesses the genuine love between Charlotte and Meier, and she begins to question the cycle of violence she has embraced. After losing several of her brothers—Grove sacrifices himself to save her, and the others are killed in the pursuit—Leila confronts the futility of vengeance. In the climax, instead of continuing the bloodshed, she picks up Charlotte’s ring and throws it into the final confrontation, showing a turn toward mercy.

Her key relationships include her bond with the Marcus Brothers, especially Grove, who is deeply in love with her and dies to protect her. She also develops a grudging respect for D, culminating in a pact they make: whoever dies first, the other will visit their grave. At the very end of the film, when D offers her his hand to help her onto his horse, she declines with a knowing smile, asserting her independence and her decision to live her own life on her own terms. Years later, Leila has retired from hunting, married, and had a family. Her funeral is attended by many people, proving she was wrong about being unloved. Her granddaughter recognizes D from a distance, underscoring that Leila’s life was full after all.

Leila has no supernatural powers; her notable abilities are her marksmanship, her mechanical aptitude, and her combat skills. She is resourceful and resilient, able to survive encounters with powerful foes through a combination of skill and luck. Her gun is her primary weapon, and she uses it effectively throughout the film.
