Description
Ai Haibara, born Shiho Miyano, entered the world within the criminal syndicate Black Organization. Her parents, scientists Atsushi and Elena Miyano, dedicated their lives to the clandestine "Silver Bullet" project before perishing in an alleged accident. A child prodigy, Shiho was dispatched to the United States for education, later resuming her parents' research in Japan. By thirteen, she served the organization under the codename "Sherry," inspired by fortified wine. At eighteen, she engineered the drug APTX 4869—initially shrouded in secrecy but deployed as an untraceable poison. During trials, Shiho noted its rare de-aging effect on mice yet withheld this finding. When Shinichi Kudo seemingly died from APTX 4869, the organization confirmed his demise, but Shiho deduced his transformation upon discovering missing childhood clothes at his home.

After the Black Organization executed her sister Akemi Miyano under unexplained circumstances, Shiho sabotaged her research, resulting in imprisonment and a death sentence. She ingested APTX 4869 to commit suicide but regressed into childhood, escaping through a laundry chute. Found near Shinichi’s home by Professor Hiroshi Agasa—who knew her parents but not their organizational ties or children—she adopted the alias "Ai Haibara." The surname translates to "ash field," while "Ai" uses the kanji for "sorrow," reflecting her anguish despite Agasa’s suggestion for "love." English adaptations rename her "Anita Hailey" or "Vi Graythorn."

As Ai Haibara, she enrolled at Teitan Elementary School, joining the Detective Boys alongside Shinichi’s shrunken identity, Conan Edogawa. Initially guarded and cynical, she confessed her true identity and role in creating APTX 4869 to Conan, straining their rapport. Gradually, she trusted him and the Detective Boys, embracing them as her first true friends. She pursued an APTX antidote, though progress stalled after her research data was destroyed. Fearful of the Black Organization—especially operatives Gin and Vermouth—she deemed herself a hazard to others, declaring, "I’m dangerous and not like the others."

Haibara displays a calm, analytical demeanor laced with sarcasm, wielding expertise spanning science, history, and theology. Though reserved, she exhibits tenderness toward animals and sporadically shares personal quirks like her fondness for peanut butter and blueberry jelly sandwiches from her U.S. years. Her mature bearing eclipses her apparent age, and she covets luxury brands like Prada and Fusae, leveraging them as bargaining tools during cases. Exhaustion from nocturnal antidote research earned her Conan’s moniker "evil-eyed yawny girl."

In *Magic File 4: The Osaka Okonomiyaki Odyssey*—a postscript to *The Lost Ship in the Sky*—Haibara travels to Osaka with the Detective Boys, Conan, and Agasa. She observes their quest to reach an okonomiyaki restaurant alongside Heiji Hattori and Kazuha Toyama, providing quiet support that underscores her group integration despite innate caution.

Her evolution includes bonding with Ran Mouri and idolizing footballer Ryusuke Higo, relating to his departure from a "black organization" (Noir Tokyo). The compilation film *The Story of Ai Haibara ~Black Iron Mystery Train~* chronicles her pivotal moments, featuring re-dubbed scenes from *The Jet-Black Mystery Train* episode, where a staged explosion confirms her "death" to the organization.
