Description
Nanami Simpson is the eleven-year-old protagonist of the anime series Tico and Friends. She is a Japanese-American girl who lost her mother at a young age and lives aboard her father Scott Simpson’s marine research vessel, the Peperonchino. Her father is a marine biologist dedicated to finding and preserving a mythical creature known as the Luminous Whale, a whale capable of glowing brightly underwater. Because of her father’s work, Nanami spends her childhood traveling the world’s oceans.

Nanami’s defining trait is her deep, unbreakable bond with a female orca named Tico. Tico was rescued as a baby just before Nanami was born, and the two have been inseparable ever since. They swim together every day, and through this constant practice Nanami has developed extraordinary underwater abilities: she can hold her breath for much longer than an ordinary human and swim to depths others cannot reach. This physical skill becomes a key asset in her adventures.

Her personality is marked by bravery, kindness, and a lively sense of curiosity. She loves the sea and all its creatures, treating every marine animal she meets as a friend. She is also caring and empathetic, often putting the well-being of others—human or animal—ahead of her own. Despite the loss of her mother, Nanami maintains an optimistic and determined outlook, though she carries a quiet longing for the family she has lost.

Nanami’s role in the story is that of the central protagonist. She accompanies her father on his quest for the Luminous Whale, which brings him into conflict with the Gaiatron Corporation, a greedy research conglomerate led by Adrienne Benex. Benex wants to exploit the Luminous Whale for a rare element it carries, and she is aided by her right-hand man Gaulois and the obsessed scientist Dr. Charles LeConte. Nanami, along with her father and Tico, works to locate the whale first and protect it. Over the course of the series, the crew of the Peperonchino expands to include several key allies: Al Andretti, the first mate; Cheryl Melville, an adventurous heiress; her loyal butler James McIntyre; and Thomas LeConte, the introverted son of Dr. LeConte, who joins the crew to prove himself. Nearly halfway through the series, Tico gives birth to a calf named Junior, further deepening Nanami’s responsibilities and emotional ties.

Key relationships drive Nanami’s development. Her father Scott is her primary guardian and mentor, and their shared goal creates a strong partnership. Her bond with Tico is the emotional heart of the series; they communicate through a special killer whistle and full-body gestures, allowing them to coordinate in dangerous situations. Nanami also forms meaningful friendships with Thomas, Cheryl, and Al, learning to trust and rely on others. Her interactions with Tico’s calf Junior show her nurturing side and her growing understanding of life and parenthood. Over the course of the series, Nanami matures from a carefree girl into a more responsible and determined young protector of the ocean, driven by both love for her friends and a clear sense of environmental stewardship.

Her notable abilities include exceptional breath control and swimming stamina, the ability to communicate non-verbally with Tico, and a deep intuitive knowledge of marine life. She is also resourceful and courageous in the face of danger, often taking the initiative to help others in distress. Nanami does not possess superhuman powers, but her physical training and her bond with Tico allow her to accomplish feats that set her apart from ordinary people. She acts as a bridge between humans and the ocean, embodying the series’ themes of friendship, conservation, and the wonder of the natural world.
