Description
Haruka Urashima is the elder cousin of the main protagonist Keitaro Urashima, though he often refers to her as "aunt." This is because she was adopted and raised by her grandmother, Hina Urashima, making her both his cousin and aunt in a technical sense. Her early life was marked by tragedy, as her parents were killed in an accident when she was a child, leading to her adoption by her grandmother. She grew up living at the Hinata Inn. As a teenager working at the inn, she was first called "Aunty Haruka" by her baby cousin Keitaro, a period that also marked the first time Keitaro met other key characters.

Haruka possesses a calm and worldly-wise personality. While she often gives the impression of being coldly detached, she actually demonstrates patient tolerance and affection towards the residents of Hinata House. She frequently offers level-headed advice, drawing from her life experience, which helps guide Keitaro and others. Haruka is known for her smoking habit, which she has had since her college days. An aloof and mostly unflappable figure, there are very few things that visibly rattle her, though she appears actively intimidated by Kanako Urashima, Keitaro's adoptive sister. Despite her cool exterior, she possesses a hidden kinky side, owning various stylized outfits like a full-body dress and a French maid uniform.

Her motivations are largely rooted in her past and a desire to move forward from it. She initially runs the Hinata Café and serves as the practical house mother for Hinata House, handing over the official landlord title to Keitaro at their grandmother's wish but continuing to handle the administrative work and offer guidance. A significant portion of her history involves a complicated romantic relationship with Noriyasu Seta. While attending Tokyo University, she met Seta and worked as his excavation assistant, falling in love with him as they traveled the globe on adventures. However, their relationship became a love triangle involving the mother of Sarah McDougal. Seta promised to choose between them by the time he turned thirty, but Sarah's mother passed away before this could happen, leading to a deterioration of Haruka's relationship with Seta. A key motivation for Haruka is maintaining her distance from this painful past. When Seta returns to honor his promise and propose, she vehemently refuses him, still hurt by the previous circumstances.

Haruka's role in the story is that of the steady, observant mentor and background authority. For much of the narrative, she stays on the sidelines, watching over the chaotic lives of the Hinata House residents and stepping in only when things become too energetic. She serves as the proprietor of the Wafū Chabō Hinata café and is the de facto manager of the dormitory, providing an adult perspective and the voice of common sense. Although she does not seek the spotlight, her actions often create opportunities for the younger characters' development, such as when she enlists them to help run Beach Café Hinata. Her relationship with Seta remains a significant subplot that comes to the forefront, with her past adventures contrasting her current domestic role.

Key relationships define much of Haruka's character. Her bond with Keitaro is one of familial care and quiet support, offering him wisdom and helping him find his place at Hinata House. Her relationship with Seta is the most complex, evolving from a globe-trotting romantic partner to a resentful ex-associate before eventually reconciling. This reconciliation and her own journey of forgiveness mirror and inspire the main couple, Keitaro and Naru. She also has a notable, though primarily unseen, set of acquaintances, including some who seem to be connected to the Yakuza, whom she calls upon for assistance.

Haruka undergoes significant character development, primarily concerning her closed-off heart. Her arc involves finally confronting her unresolved feelings for Seta. After considerable meddling from Keitaro and Naru, she tentatively accepts his engagement ring. This leads to a final adventure where she joins Seta and the others in the Kingdom of Molmol. At the climax, in the ruins of Todai, Seta returns an artifact, fulfilling an old promise to Sarah's mother. With encouragement from the group, Haruka accepts Seta's proposal, and the two are married in the ancient ruins. Following her marriage, she decides to stay with Seta to continue excavating the ruins, passing the running of the Hinata Teahouse on to Mutsumi and Mitsune. After marriage, her name changes to Haruka Seta.

Haruka possesses several notable abilities. Her physical prowess and marksmanship with a gun are said to be on par with Seta, a testament to their adventurous past. She is also highly skilled in a martial art known as Pa Ki Ken (Hakkyokuken), which she learned during her travels, and is capable of using this skill to overpower Seta's Jeet Kune Do. Additionally, she is proficient with a whip. Despite her cool and collected demeanor, she is a formidable force, both in terms of her fighting ability and her unshakeable willpower.
