Description
Emi Akezawa is the mother of Baki Hanma and the former lover of the world's strongest creature, Yujiro Hanma. Before her death at approximately thirty years old, she was a strikingly beautiful woman who served as the wealthy leader of the Akezawa Group. Her hair was dark amber, and she stood about 165 centimeters tall. It is implied that before rising to wealth and power, Emi worked as a prostitute. She later married a rich yakuza boss and business owner named Eiichi Akezawa, but her life changed forever when she encountered Yujiro Hanma at a party. Instantly fixated on him and unable to look away, her infatuation was noticed by her husband, who slapped her in anger. When Yujiro later appeared and killed Eiichi by snapping his neck, he saw through Emi, declaring that she was a sadistic woman who truly enjoyed watching brutal violence and death. Rather than recoiling, Emi responded with a lustful smile and embraced him. She lied to the police about the murder, took over her late husband's business, and vowed to raise the child she was carrying—Yujiro's son, Baki.

Emi's personality is defined by her all-consuming obsession with Yujiro Hanma. On the surface, she initially appeared to be a supportive mother, investing heavily in Baki's training by hiring the best instructors. However, this support was revealed to be entirely conditional on her desire to make Baki strong enough to impress his father. She openly admitted that the maternal bond meant nothing to her and that Yujiro was the only person who truly mattered. As a leader, she was typically calm, eloquent, and competent, but any situation involving Yujiro would carry her away with a mixture of excitement and deep frustration. Her dark side included an obsessive admiration for brutality, which was precisely the quality that attracted Yujiro to her. As a mother, she was neglectful and abusive. When Yujiro expressed displeasure with Baki's progress, Emi became distraught and blamed her son for his weakness, striking him and even biting him when he tried to embrace her and plead for her love. Her cruelty reached its peak when she told Baki that his weakness was his fault and that she could not understand why she had such a weak child.

Despite this, Emi's motivations were singularly focused on securing Yujiro's affection. She believed that by forging Baki into a warrior worthy of his father, she would earn a place at Yujiro's side. This obsession drove her to push Baki relentlessly, never showing him genuine love. She was excited when Yujiro appeared after Baki's fights and devastated when Yujiro rejected her, telling her that if Baki was not strong enough, she would be nothing to him. Her role in the story is ultimately tragic. During the brutal battle between father and son, Emi initially stood by Yujiro, cheering for her beloved and shouting for Baki to make his father happy. She became excited witnessing Yujiro's joy at pummeling his own son. But when she saw the state Baki was in, her dormant maternal instincts finally awakened. She realized she did love her son after all, experiencing flashbacks of nursing him as a baby. In a desperate act of redemption, she charged at Yujiro to protect Baki, punching him and breaking both her wrists, even spitting in his face to show his brutality no longer impressed her. Yujiro responded by crushing her in a bear hug, breaking her back and spine. Still alive but dying, she cradled the unconscious Baki and sang him a lullaby as she comforted him. By the next morning, when Baki carried her through the streets and laid her down in a field of flowers, she had passed away. Her death became a defining moment for Baki, who buried her wedding ring while crying and swore he would defeat his father.

Key relationships defined Emi's life. Her connection to Yujiro Hanma was one of obsessive love, though he viewed her primarily as a tool to produce a strong child. Her relationship with her son Baki was tragic and abusive, as she denied him affection while pushing him to become stronger for selfish reasons, though she ultimately sacrificed herself for him. She had a stepson, Jack Hanma, as well as in-laws including Yujiro's mother and father, Yuichiro Hanma. She also had an ex-husband, Eiichi, whose murder she covered up. Her loyal assistant was Hitoshi Kuriyagawa. In terms of abilities, Emi possessed no fighting skills whatsoever. Her power was financial and social, as she successfully ran the Akezawa Group as a wealthy and competent leader. She was also skilled at gathering information, keeping close watch on Baki's activities. Her only notable physical actions in combat were ultimately futile, as her attack on Yujiro only succeeded in breaking her own wrists before he killed her. Emi's development throughout the story is a tragic arc from a demure young woman who discovered her own dark nature, to an obsessive and abusive mother, and finally to a figure of maternal redemption who died protecting the son she had long neglected.
