Pen Pen is a warm-water penguin who lives as the pet and companion of Misato Katsuragi in her Tokyo-3 apartment, where he occupies a dedicated second freezer fitted out with a bed, lamp, and other comforts that replicate his preferred environment. He does not correspond directly to any real-world species, though his appearance most closely resembles an erect-crested penguin, and he is distinguished by retractable claws on each flipper, a feature no living bird possesses. He wears a small backpack and a metal collar bearing the serial number BX 293A, details that hint at an institutional origin.
