Description
Dr. Ann Laurent is a scientist who serves as a supporting antagonist in the 2019 live-action film Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Her background is that of a Pokémon researcher whose original goal was to conduct experiments to control the minds of Pokémon. Because her fellow academics deemed this work unethical, her college grant was revoked. This professional setback did not diminish her dedication; rather, it led her to be recruited by Howard Clifford, the visionary founder of Clifford Industries.

Motivated by the opportunity to continue her forbidden research, Dr. Laurent accepted a position at the Pokémon Comprehensive Laboratory, or PCL, which is a research facility located outside of Ryme City. There, she was granted her own laboratory where she conducted various experiments on Pokémon evolution, including projects involving a discolored Greninja and an oversized Torterra. Her role in the story becomes crucial as she works to bring Howard Clifford's twisted utopia to life, though her personal motivations stem from a scientific, rather than an ideological, drive. She exhibits a calm, collected, and highly intelligent demeanor, referring to herself under the ominous alias known simply as The Doctor.

A key part of her work involves tracking and capturing the mythical Pokémon Mewtwo. To achieve this, she contacted Detective Harry Goodman and convinced him to help capture the creature, which had escaped from the Kanto region nearly twenty years prior. Once Mewtwo was secured in a containment unit at the PCL, Dr. Laurent used its unique genetics to develop a dangerous purple serum known as R. This drug was designed to cause any Pokémon to go completely berserk, and she supplied it to Sebastian, who ran an illegal battle ring in Ryme City, to test its effects.

Beyond the mind-altering drug, Dr. Laurent also invented a sophisticated neural link device. This headgear would allow Howard Clifford to implant his own consciousness directly into Mewtwo’s body. The combination of the R drug and Mewtwo’s phenomenal psychic power was intended to allow her employer to forcibly fuse human minds with Pokémon bodies, creating his vision of a world where humans and Pokémon literally live as one.

Dr. Laurent has one primary and significant relationship that defines her role in the narrative: her employer and benefactor, Howard Clifford. He restored her career and provided the resources she needed to continue her experiments when the academic world rejected her. She also has a professional, transactional relationship with Detective Harry Goodman, whom she enlisted to capture Mewtwo.

Regarding her development and ultimate fate, Dr. Laurent does not undergo a redemption arc. She remains committed to her scientific work and its intended purpose until the very end. Her downfall occurs when Harry Goodman, having discovered the truth about the R drug and Clifford's intentions, returned to the PCL. He and his partner Pikachu sabotaged the machine restraining Mewtwo, leading to the creature breaking free and causing a massive explosion that Dr. Laurent was caught in. Her exact fate is left ambiguous; while she is caught in the blast, it is not definitively confirmed whether she perished or not, though her physical role in the story concludes at that point.

As a scientist, Dr. Laurent possesses notable abilities in the fields of Pokémon neurology and genetic manipulation. Her primary achievement is the creation of the drug R from Mewtwo’s genetic material, as well as the design of a complex neural link device for mind transference. She is resourceful and able to operate a sophisticated laboratory with a team of scientists, demonstrating expertise in both theoretical research and applied, albeit unethical, experimentation.
