Description
Anna Kyouyama is a central figure in her story, introduced as the fiancée and later wife of the protagonist, Yoh Asakura. She is an itako, a traditional Japanese shaman also referred to as a spirit medium, whose specialty is channeling and summoning spirits from anywhere, including from heaven where ordinary shamans cannot reach.
Anna was abandoned as a young girl by her birth parents, who became terrified of her powerful shamanic abilities, particularly her innate mind-reading power known as reishi, or soul sight. Left on Mount Osore, she was found and adopted by Kino Asakura, Yoh's grandmother, who gave her the surname Kyouyama, an alternate reading of the characters for Mount Osore. Recognizing her inherent potential, Yoh's grandparents decided that she would be a suitable bride for Yoh, arranging their engagement.
Before meeting Yoh, Anna had little control over her reishi ability, which forced her to involuntarily absorb the negative emotions of everyone around her. This constant exposure to the darkness in people's hearts caused her to develop a deep resentment towards others, a hatred that would manifest as powerful oni, or demonic ogres. To protect herself and others, she tried to avoid going out, often confining herself to her room. When Yoh met her at age ten, he was attacked by one of these oni but persisted in trying to befriend her. Yoh's positive influence allowed Anna to gradually open her heart. When she accompanied him to a temple on New Year's Eve, the overwhelming desires of the crowd caused her to summon a powerful, sentient Oh-Oni that kidnapped her. Yoh and his guardian spirit Matamune saved her, with Matamune sacrificing his physical form to give Yoh the power to defeat the oni. The Oh-Oni's corpse was later forged into Anna's primary weapon, the 1080 beads. Because Yoh freed her from the darkness that haunted her each day, she grew to love him and resolved to become stronger to repay him for everything he sacrificed for her.
Anna's personality is aggressive, decisive, and pragmatic. To most people, she appears cold, harsh, and domineering, often subjecting Yoh to brutal training regimens that he likens to torture. She can be extremely possessive of Yoh, becoming jealous if she suspects other women are showing him attention. However, this harsh exterior masks a deeply caring and loyal nature reserved for those she loves. She holds a profound gratitude for Yoh, who was the first true friend she ever had, and she is genuinely dedicated to becoming the ultimate Shaman Queen and wife to him. She firmly believes Yoh is destined to become the Shaman King and considers it her duty as his fiancée to train him relentlessly to achieve his dream. Despite her violent treatment of Yoh, she explicitly admits to loving him, and her composure crumbles only when she believes he is in genuine mortal danger, as seen when she broke down crying thinking he was about to be killed or when she was in hysterics after Hao stole his soul.
Anna's role in the story is that of Yoh's primary motivator and trainer, driving much of his growth and preparation for the Shaman Fight. She is a powerful shaman in her own right, possessing tremendous spiritual strength and mastery of advanced techniques. Her spiritual power allowed her to seal and take control of Hao Asakura's powerful shikigami guardians, Zenki and Kouki, using them as her own spirit allies. She shows little fear of the main antagonist Hao, detesting him and even slapping him without hesitation, an act that only amuses him and deepens his interest in her. It has been hinted that Anna is the reincarnation of the original Asakura Hao's mother from one thousand years ago, which may explain his fascination with her. Her key relationships are with the Asakura family, particularly her bond with Kino, her mentor, and her unwavering loyalty to Yoh. Over the course of the story, Anna evolves from a deeply traumatized and isolated child into a decisive and formidable young woman whose dedication to her loved ones drives her every action.
As an itako, Anna's most notable ability is Kuchiyose, the power to summon any spirit from the afterlife at any time with only a small amount of information about the spirit. She wields the 1080 beads, forged from the Oh-Oni, to fight strong spirits and shamans. Her physical strength is also formidable, with her right-hand slap and her legendary left-hand slap being infamous for subduing even powerful characters like Hao. She possesses the ability to nullify Furyoku-based attacks and reflect curses back at their caster. After mastering the Chō-Senjiryakketsu, a secret text of shamanic techniques written by Hao, she gained access to a vast array of powerful spells, including healing techniques capable of resurrecting the dead, exorcism magic, and a forbidden killing curse that can rip the soul from a body.
