Hayami's interest in acting began in his youth, inspired by watching the anime Astro Boy. He pursued this path by working with the Seinenza Theater Company and the Shiki Theater Company. His professional voice acting career was launched after he won the grand prize in the Amateur Voice Actor Contest sponsored by Nippon Broadcasting System in 1980. He made his debut in the early 1980s, with one of his first roles being in the animated film Queen Millennia.

He is widely recognized for his smooth, deep, and distinctively resonant voice, which he has employed to portray a vast array of characters across different genres. This range extends from charismatic heroes and noble figures to cold, calculating antagonists. Some of his most iconic and enduring roles include the blue-haired ace pilot Maximilian Jenius in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the enigmatic and treacherous Sosuke Aizen in Bleach, the kind-hearted yet fierce Nicholas D. Wolfwood in Trigun, the flamboyant Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki in Fairy Tail, and the elegant villain Zarbon in Dragon Ball Z. He also voiced Tokiomi Tohsaka in Fate/Zero, Vanilla Ice in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Masami Eiri in Serial Experiments Lain.

Beyond anime, Hayami has lent his voice to numerous video game characters, such as Jhin in League of Legends, and has been a regular performer in the Angelique series as Julious. He is also active as a singer and narrator, releasing vocal albums and participating in live reading performances and dinner shows. His work in the Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- project, where he voices Jakurai Jinguji, was particularly notable as it allowed him to utilize his theatrical background in recording and performance, and contributed to him receiving the Singing Award at the 13th Seiyu Awards in 2019. With over four decades of experience, he has been involved in hundreds of roles, including the supporting role of Saizou Kirigakure in the 1989 original video animation Kyomu Senshi Miroku.
