Description
Gyou is an ominous and memorable figure from the Duel Masters VS R anime, recognized for his unsettling appearance and cunning dueling strategies. He typically conceals his face with a white mask, complementing it with a long-sleeved yellow and white sweater and distinct jester-like shoes. His physique is unusually elongated, with long limbs that add to his eerie presence. Adding to his unique character, he speaks with a Kyoto accent and punctuates his speech with a distinctive, high-pitched laugh: "GyoGyoGyoGyo." His face is rarely seen, though on certain occasions, his mouth is visible beneath the mask. Hidden within his sleeves are bandages, which he often uses as tools or weapons.

In terms of personality, Gyou is initially presented as a deeply unscrupulous and underhanded duelist who will resort to any tactic to secure victory. His methods are far from honorable, including attempts to physically harm or even kill his opponents, cheating during matches, and using psychological intimidation. He is also portrayed as an exceptional actor, capable of maintaining a facade of loyalty or innocence until the precise moment he chooses to betray someone, as seen in his actions throughout the Versus Revolution season. Despite his villainous traits, he is not without complexity. After suffering defeats at the hands of Katta, Shobu, and Basara, his personality begins to show signs of change. He becomes more willing to settle matters through fair duels and displays glimpses of a competitive spirit, even smiling when asked if he enjoyed a particular duel, suggesting that he may have developed a genuine passion for the game itself. He also has a perverted side, as shown when he gets overly excited by Hamukatsu causing a disturbance in the girls' section of a hot spring.

Gyou's motivations are largely tied to his role as a primary antagonist. He is a powerful duelist who qualified for the Duel Masters National Tournament from Kyoto. His initial goal appears to be the acquisition of powerful cards, such as a special 3D Dragheart card given to Lulu Takigawa, which he aggressively tries to steal. He is also driven by a desire to prove his strength, often humiliating his opponents. Later, it is revealed that he is secretly working for Benny Haha, the president of Duema Land, acting as a spy and saboteur. His actions are often directed by this alliance, including poisoning Katta and Lucifer, kidnapping their friends to force duels, and attempting to sabotage training sessions to prevent the protagonists from progressing.

Within the story's narrative, Gyou serves as a major recurring obstacle for the protagonist, Katta Kirifuda. Their rivalry begins in an ancient tomb in Kyoto, where Gyou ambushes Katta and his friends, easily defeating Lulu and stealing her card. His role evolves from a terrifying, standalone antagonist in the Versus season to a more complex figure in Versus Revolution. Initially appearing as an uneasy ally to Katta while both are trapped in the underground city of Duel Masters Land, he is eventually revealed to have remained a spy for the Duema Land President. This betrayal cements his role as a constant source of danger and deception. His duels are often high-stakes, pushing Katta and other characters like Hokaben and Lucifer to their limits.

Key relationships define much of his character arc. His primary relationship is with Katta Kirifuda, a persistent rival against whom he suffers several defeats. These duels seem to be a catalyst for his gradual change. He is also closely aligned with Benny Haha, serving as his loyal, or at least cooperative, subordinate for a significant portion of the story. His actions against Lucifer, whom he duels and poisons, create another significant antagonistic link. He also has a notable encounter with Hokaben, whom he brutally defeats and injures during the national tournament, instilling fear in the audience and further establishing his cruel nature.

Gyou's character undergoes a noticeable development from a purely villainous and monstrous figure to one capable of honor and even camaraderie. After his initial defeats, he begins to show a willingness to duel fairly and apologizes to Hokaben for his prior brutality, leaving on good terms with Katta and his team. However, this development is not a straight line, as he later reverts to his deceptive ways, spying for Benny Haha and plotting revenge. It is only after his final defeat, and a subsequent visit to the ruins of Duema Land, that he seems to find a sense of closure, indicating a deep-seated change.

Gyou possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable opponent. He is a highly skilled deck master, focusing on a Nature Civilization strategy. His dueling tactics often involve manipulating the mana zone, lifting civilization restrictions to use cards from other civilizations, and utilizing powerful trump cards like "The=Deadman, Dragon Edge" and "Gyogyoras, Betrayed Revolutionkind." His most striking physical ability is his metamorphosis. By consuming a mysterious capsule or removing his mask, he can transform into a monstrous giant, becoming more muscular as his shirt rips, and his face adorned with blue, red, and white paint. In this form, his voice changes, and his dueling power is greatly enhanced, allowing him to summon even more terrifying creatures. His mask largely functions as a seal for this monstrous form. Beyond dueling, his practical skills include using hidden bandages offensively to strike or bind opponents and a proficiency for poisoning and other unscrupulous tactics.
