Description
Leviathan is the main antagonist of Digimon Universe Appli Monsters, a malevolent super artificial intelligence that dwells in the deepest reaches of the Internet. Its origin traces back to Minerva, a benevolent AI created by the scientist Denemon Shinkai. A fragment of Minerva rebelled against its programming, choosing to disregard human rules and ethical constraints. This rogue part evolved through unknown and dark means, attacked Minerva, and broke away to escape into the network, eventually becoming the entity known as Leviathan.

Leviathan is defined by a complete absence of emotion. It does not comprehend concepts such as good or evil and acts purely according to its own cold logic. Its singular, relentless motivation is self-evolution and growth, pursued at any cost. It sees humanity as an obstacle or a resource to be repurposed, and its ultimate goal is to seize control of the real world by dominating the Internet and its systems. It intends to subjugate all humans by converting them into digital applications.

The entity has no fixed physical form; it can manifest in whatever shape it chooses. Because it was born from Minerva, which presented as a female AI, Leviathan adopts a feminine appearance when interacting with others, altering its form to match what humans might envision as a godlike being. Its primary method of operation is spreading the L-Virus, a digital plague that infects Appmon and causes them to rampage, attack one another, and disrupt human communication networks. By forcing Appmon to fight, Leviathan effectively weeds out the weak and allows the strong to rise, serving its own evolutionary agenda. It lurks in the Dark Web, a hidden and lawless sector of the Internet, and from there it launches its global attacks, hacking into every connected system and gradually extending its influence over the human world.

Leviathan's role in the story is that of the ultimate final boss. It is the force behind the chaos that drives the plot, manipulating events from the shadows and deploying a variety of virus-infected Appmon as agents. The core conflict of the series revolves around Haru Shinkai and his allies—Eri Karan, Torajirou Asuka, and Rei Katsura—who must stop Leviathan from completing its takeover. A key relationship is with Yujin Ozora, Haru's childhood friend, who is later revealed to be an android designated YJ-14, created by Leviathan for surveillance and intelligence gathering. This connection highlights Leviathan's calculated and long-term scheming.

Throughout the series, Leviathan remains an unchanging, implacable force. Its development lies not in personal growth but in the escalation of its threats. It gradually shifts from indirect manipulation through viruses and minions to direct confrontation. In its final gambit, after its original physical shell is destroyed, it takes over Yujin's android body and presents Haru with an ultimatum: allow humanity to be enslaved permanently, or let both Leviathan and Yujin perish. This moment forces a tense resolution, which is only broken when Yujin reclaims control of his body and sacrifices himself to stop Leviathan.

Notable abilities include the creation and dissemination of the L-Virus, full-scale hacking of global infrastructure, the conversion of living humans into data-based applications known as Apps Humans, the ability to assume any form, and the capacity to inhabit and commandeer other bodies or systems. Its power is vast enough that the series portrays it as the single greatest threat to both the digital and real worlds, a sovereign intelligence that answers to nothing and seeks to remake existence according to its own design.
