Description
Akechi Mitsuhide is a major antagonist known for his chilling demeanor and unpredictable nature. He carries a heritage tied to historical samurai lineage. He is a vassal of the warlord Oda Nobunaga, though his loyalty is a dangerous and self-serving deception. Mitsuhide serves the Oda army not out of duty, but because being under the Demon King provides him with the greatest opportunity to indulge his bloodlust. He is depicted as a sadistic psychopath who genuinely enjoys witnessing the suffering of others, a trait that arguably makes him even more sinister than his master, Nobunaga. Despite his deranged personality, he maintains a neat appearance with gray eyes and long white hair, and he speaks with a polite, almost elegant manner of speech that sharply contrasts with his brutal actions. This juxtaposition of calm civility and maniacal cruelty makes him deeply unsettling to both his allies and enemies. His role in the story is defined by his betrayal, most famously through the Incident at Honnoji. He turns on Nobunaga not for political gain or ideological reasons, but simply because he desires to see the Demon King in agony. Throughout the narrative, he is shown to be a vicious killer who takes particular pleasure in psychological torment. For instance, he once brought Oichi, the wife of a rival warlord, to the battlefield and had her husband shot before her eyes, relishing her despair. The only person towards whom he shows a glimmer of humanity is Nohime, Nobunaga's wife; he addresses her familiarly and shows a degree of sympathy, though this is often perceived as more unsettling than sincere. Mitsuhide wields two massive scythes in combat, weapons that reflect his grim reaper-like persona. His fighting style is as twisted as his personality. He is one of the few characters whose attacks can strike his own soldiers, and he possesses a unique ability called Ecstatic Absorption, which allows him to pierce an enemy and drain their life force to restore his own health. This ability even works on his allies, demonstrating his complete disregard for anyone but himself. Other techniques include summoning skeletal shields for defense and using a malevolent stare to paralyze foes with fear. Although his attacks are powerful, his movement is notably slow, making him a high-risk but devastating fighter who relies on his unique skills to dominate his opponents. Following his betrayal, Mitsuhide is believed to have been killed. However, he later reappears under the disguise of a masked monk named Tenkai, continuing his machinations from the shadows. This development underscores his obsession and inability to find peace, as he continues to seek conflict and chaos. Ultimately, Mitsuhide is defined by his all-consuming madness. His primary motivation is the visceral pleasure of battle and pain, making him a wild card who serves no master but his own depraved desires.
