TV-Series
Description
Baron Ricks serves as the supreme commander of the Noza forces, the invading alien army threatening the human colony on the planet Maris. He is a primary antagonist and the central nemesis of the hero JJ and the resistance group known as the White Nuts.
In terms of personality, Baron Ricks is initially portrayed as a warrior who possesses a sense of chivalry and prefers fair fights with his opponents. This honorable demeanor, however, undergoes a dramatic transformation following a specific defeat. When JJ succeeds in cutting off one of Ricks's horns, a feature that represents a significant point of pride for his character, the commander becomes consumed by a desire for vengeance. This event marks his shift into a more cruel, ruthless, and despicable antagonist, driven less by duty and more by personal obsession.
Ricks's primary motivation evolves throughout the series. While his initial goal is the successful conquest of Maris for the Noza empire, his actions become increasingly dictated by his singular need to defeat JJ personally. This obsession reaches a point where he defies orders directly; after being relieved of his command by his superior, District Commandant Admiss, Ricks refuses to accept his dismissal and becomes a rogue agent of revenge, fixated on hunting down JJ on his own terms. His drive is so singular that he often declares only he can defeat his rival, and on several occasions, he even intervenes to save the White Nuts from other threats, believing that no one else has the right to destroy them.
Within the story, Baron Ricks is the primary antagonist who directly challenges the White Nuts throughout the original television series. He is a persistent and calculating threat, employing strategies such as launching attacks on critical infrastructure to draw the heroes out of hiding and using computer analysis to learn the secrets of their Zillion weapons. His role extends into the sequel video game, Zillion II: The Tri Formation, where he reappears as the ultimate enemy the player must defeat after he kidnaps Apple and Champ to exact his revenge. He is also a main character in the follow-up OVA, Zillion: Burning Night, which takes place after his downfall.
His key relationship is with JJ, defined by an intense and heated rivalry. Ricks's entire arc revolves around this conflict, and his identity as a commander is largely shaped by his repeated failures against his foe. His relationship with the other White Nuts, Champ and Apple, is primarily adversarial, though his obsession with JJ often supersedes his direct conflict with them. He serves under Empress Admiss, but his personal vendetta ultimately leads him to reject her authority.
Throughout the series, Baron Ricks undergoes a significant development, transforming from a respected, honorable military commander into a dishonored and vengeful outcast. His narrative arc concludes not with a simple defeat, but with a complex act of self-sacrifice. In his final moments, he intervenes to take a fatal attack meant for JJ, displaying a final, twisted sense of honor and perishing as an anti-hero of sorts.
Regarding his abilities, Baron Ricks is an exceptionally formidable warrior, depicted as one of the very few enemies who can survive a direct hit from the powerful Zillion weapon system. His primary weapon is a sword with an extendable blade that functions like a whip, which he uses to effectively counter JJ's long-range shooting abilities. His personal combat skills and resilience make him a persistent and deadly threat to the White Nuts throughout their mission to defend Maris.
